Recap of Track & Field weekend in Geneseo, look ahead to Cortland

By Logan Stolberg

The Oswego State women’s track and field team is coming off a successful weekend after the SUNY Geneseo Early Seasonal Invitational.

Ashleigh Lacy was able to place fifth in the 100 meter dash.  Lacy also finished 11th out of 38 in the 200 meter dash.  Earlier this season, Lacy had broken the Oswego State women’s track and field record in the 60 meter dash at the Rochester Institute of Technology  back on Feb. 11.  She won the event with a time of 8.08 and had broken a record that stood for 18 years, originally set by Deb Richards.  Lacy is still trying to chase down more records this season and into next season as well. Lacy is .36 milliseconds away from breaking another record that was set by Deb Richards in the 100 meter dash.  The current record is 12.85 and was set in 2004.  Lacy will also need to drop her 200 meter dash time by a second to break the current record in the 200 meter dash which is 25.62; Lacy’s best time in the event is 26.61.  It is clear that Lacy still has a lot of potential left this season and in her final season on the women’s track and field team next year.

The Lakers had multiple runners set personal records.  Senior Kayla Guerre had set a new personal best in both the 100 meter dash and in the long jump event.  It is very clear that the Lakers are continuing to improve as the season goes on, considering they are breaking an individual record nearly every time out.  Lacy has placed in the top 20 for all of her races this season except for two.  The Lakers will need those kinds of finishes from Lacy as they head towards the end of the season and into the SUNYACs.

One Laker that had a standout day was senior Lindsay Fluman. She set a personal record in javelin with a throw of 19.95 meters. Fluman also came in 13th and 14th in the hammer throw and discus events, respectively. Some of the freshmen on the team also performed well in the SUNY Geneseo Invitational. Faith Coyle notched her first win of the season as she was part of the 4×400 relay.  She was able to place 13th in the invitational in the 800 meter dash. Gretchen Dowd came 10 seconds away from tying her personal best in the 800 meter dash as she went 2:49.06.

One Laker had competed in her first track collegiate track meet last weekend, freshman runner Aliye Egan, went a 1:12.04 in the 400 meter dash.  The team will look for Egan to continue to improve as the season goes on.  There is a lot to be expected of her after a good first meet.  Egan can hopefully help the Lakers in the future.

The Lakers next meet takes place on Saturday, April 9 as they travel to Cortland for the SUNY Cortland Red Dragon Open.
