Laker Game Preview: Oswego State Women’s Lacrosse vs. SUNY Geneseo

The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team continues SUNYAC conference play this afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium. The SUNY Geneseo Knights travel to the SUNY Oswego campus to take on the Lakers. Oswego State sits at 1-1 in the conference and could use another SUNYAC victory to stay in the hunt for a post season berth. On the other side of the field, the Knights also sit at 1-1 in the conference but 5-2 overall.

Season History

OSWEGO STATE

The Lakers enter the matchup with an overall record of 2-7. Their 1-1 conference record is due to a win over SUNY Fredonia and a loss to SUNY Oneonta on the road. Oswego State started the season off with four losses to nonconference opponents before a blowout win against Morrisville State at home.

The Lakers have almost broken the 100-goal mark on the season but are getting out scored by opponents 107 to 99. The Lakers average 26.2 shots per game and have taken advantage in free position opportunities with a 45.8% success percentage.

Sela Wiley continues to lead the team in points in her junior season with the squad. Wiley has 33 points in 9 games played with 27 goals. She was recently nominated for Oswego State Female Athlete of the Week, her second time receiving the honor this season.

On defense, Oswego State has managed to get 178 ground balls and caused 79 turnovers. The Lakers have won the draw control battle against opponents with 120 over the course of their 9 games played this 2022 season.

SUNY GENESEO

The Knights of SUNY Geneseo enter the contest with the same conference record as the Lakers. Both teams are also on a one game losing streak after SUNY Geneseo dropped their last matchup to SUNYAC powerhouse SUNY Cortland by a score of 14-6. Their conference win came against Buffalo State at home by a score of 17-4. The Knights scored 12 goals in the first half to secure their first SUNYAC win.

Hanna Marafioti runs the offense for SUNY Geneseo with 19 goals and 21 assists through 7 games played this season. The attacker has taken 43 shots this season and sits at a 44.2 shot percentage. Freshman Molly Brown and Madelynn Brown have both made an impact in their rookie campaigns. The two have combined for 35 points and sit in second and third on the statistic sheet for points this season.

In between the pipes, Emily DeJohn leads the way for the SUNY Geneseo Knights. The sophomore has played all seven games for the Knights and has a 12.31 goals against average with a save percentage of 34.6%.

Matchup History

This is the 30th meeting between these two SUNYAC programs and 14th time that these two teams will play on the banks of Lake Ontario at SUNY Oswego’s campus. SUNY Geneseo holds the advantage in the matchup history with a 20-9-0 record against the Lakers.

Oswego State is currently on a four-game skid against the Knights with their most recent matchup being a 20-3 win during the 2021 season. That game was played on Apr. 25, 2021 during the shortened season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Players to Watch

OSWEGO STATE: Sarah Kamide

Starting netminder Sarah Kamide is going to need to be a brick wall this afternoon if the Lakers want to stop the high powered offense of SUNY Geneseo. Kamide holds a 11.85 goals against average and a .451 save percentage through 9 games played. Kamide has been impressive in her rookie campaign, filling the shoes of previous Oswego State netminder Delaney Kendrick. The Lakers will need a big performance from the freshman to get their second SUNYAC win of the 2022 campaign.

SUNY GENESEO: Hannah Marafioti

Leading point getter Hannah Marafioti is going to be a player to look for on the field later today. If you are the Lakers, the plan is to keep the ball out of her stick. Marafioti already has 40 points in 7 games played for SUNY Geneseo this season. The Knights offense is quarterbacked by Marafioti and she will be the difference maker in today’s conference game.

Final Thoughts and Prediction

This conference game means a lot for two teams looking to stay in the hunt and chase down the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons. For the Lakers, a win against SUNY Geneseo is another step closer to the postseason, something that the women’s lacrosse team has not been apart of in a few years. For SUNY Geneseo, this is a must win. The Knights need to get back on track to remain in the hunt. Expect some pretty goals, and even better saves from the netminders. Fans will see a back and forth game between two teams looking for their second conference win of the season.

Prediction: 14-9 SUNY Geneseo
