Women’s lacrosse defeats SUNY Fredonia on win streak

The Oswego State women’s lacrosse team took this week to prepare for another SUNYAC matchup this weekend. On Saturday, the Lakers will head back on the road to take on the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons in their second conference game of the 2022 season.

Oswego State is coming off a dominating 19-4 victory over SUNY Fredonia that occurred last Saturday at Laker Turf Stadium. The team was led by upperclassmen Sela Wiley and Shae McConnell who both had five goals in the contest. Wiley would open the flood gates just nine seconds into the contest as the Lakers pulled away for their second win of the season.

Netminder Sarah Kamide gave up four goals over the course of the contest and racked up eight saves. The first-year goaltender averages 11.09 goals against in between the pipes for the Lakers and has a save percentage of .464.

Once again, the Lakers are led by Wiley on the statistics sheet as the captain has 20 goals and six assists in eight games played so far in her junior season. The Laker is on pace to break her season stat list and most recently cracked 50 total career goals in only 21 games played in an Oswego State uniform.

Newcomer Madison Davis has also been a great addition to the offense as the junior transfer has 22 points already in her first season. The attacker has four games with multiple goals and had a nine-point performance against Morrisville State back on March 11.

Another bright spot in terms of offense for the Lakers comes during the free position opportunities. Oswego State has made 21 out of the 43 so far this season which puts them at 48.8 percent. This puts the team in second behind SUNY Oneonta based on this statistic.

On defense, the Lakers have given up 89 total goals, four of those coming when the Lakers are a woman-down. Oswego State also has allowed 166 shots to reach Kamide in net, a total that is 10 higher than their own offense.

The Lakers are more prepared than last season for those conference games due to the lengthier nonconference schedule to kick off the 2022 campaign. After a limited season last year due to COVID-19, Oswego State seems prepared for the remainder of their schedule.

Turning the focus to the SUNY Oneonta, the Red Dragons also have a losing record sitting at 2-4 overall. In terms of conference play, SUNY Oneonta is 0-1 after falling to SUNY Cortland on Wednesday by a score of 15-3. SUNY Oneonta did not score in the second half as SUNY Cortland starts 1-0 in the conference.

These two programs did not play against each other during the 2021 season due to the conference being split into two separate divisions. Their last meeting was back in 2019 when the Lakers defeated the Red Dragons by a score of 17-15.

Oswego State is currently on a three-game win streak against SUNY Oneonta that dates to May 1, 2018, when the Lakers won 12-8 on the road in Oneonta, New York. However, the Lakers are 6-7-0 while on the road against the Red Dragons squad and are losing in the matchup history with an overall record of 13-17-0 while facing off against SUNY Oneonta.

Looking ahead, Oswego State will travel back to SUNY Oswego for a two-game home stand. The Lakers will host SUNYAC opponent SUNY Geneseo mid-week for a Wednesday afternoon showdown up on the turf across Route 104. SUNY New Paltz will come to town on Saturday for another conference matchup. The Lakers only have conference games left to play with Oswego State seeing each school once prior to the opening round of the SUNYAC Championship that kicks off on May 3.

Catch Oswego State in action next Wednesday versus SUNY Geneseo at Laker Turf Stadium. Game is set to 4:00 p.m.
