Laker Quick Recap: men’s hockey SUNYAC Championship

The Oswego State Lakers fall to SUNY Geneseo again in the SUNYAC Championship which ends their 2021-22 season. The final score was 6-1 in favor of the Ice Knights of Geneseo. Conor Smart scored the lone Oswego State goal in the second period. SUNY Geneseo is now locked into the national tournament after their fourth straight conference title.

Pre-game

  • Oswego State returns to the SUNYAC Championship. The Lakers have played the Ice Knights the past three times in the championship game.
  • SUNY Geneseo is coming off a win over SUNY Brockport in the semi-final round. Oswego State defeated SUNY Cortland on Wednesday by a score of 4-0.
  • Steven Kozikoski posted a shutout against SUNY Cortland. The Liverpool native will be the starter for the Lakers tonight in possibly his last game in an Oswego State uniform.
  • Tonight’s crowd is sold out in the Ira S. Wilson Arena on the campus of SUNY Geneseo.

First Period

  • GOALS:
  • GENESEO: Justin Cmunt (PP) @ 12:09 from Chris Perna and Alex Wilkins
  • GOALTENDING:
  • OSWEGO: Steven Kozikoski (8 saves on 9 shots)
  • GENESEO: Matt Petizian (7 saves on 7 shots)
  • Oswego State with a grade B quality chance in the first twenty seconds. Connor Sleeth misses a wide-open net on an odd angle and the game remains scoreless.
  • Physicality starting to pick up now. Rocco Andreacchi (extra skater) gives a big hit right off the faceoff.
  • With 12:14 remaining, Levi Wunder went on a breakaway but missed wide on Steven Kozikoski.
  • Connor Sleeth with another good opportunity off a neutral zone regroup. The Lakers defenseman were able to find Sleeth curling through the middle of the ice.
  • Tommy Cahill goes to the box with 9:40 remaining in the 1st period. The interference call puts Oswego State down a man for two minutes.
  • Connor Smart overextends and Cmunt buries low past Kozikoski on a slap shot from the top of the left circle. The penalty kill was off to a solid start prior to that shot. Cmunt’s 17th of the campaign.
  • Another solid chance from Oswego State with 6:25 remaining in the first period. On the next rush, Sleeth went for a wraparound opportunity.
  • A turnover in front of the net with 5:21 remaining lead to a scramble but Matt Petizian covers. The puck jumped right over the defenseman’s stick and almost went in low past the pads of Petizian.
  • Peter Morgan goes to the box for holding with 2:46 remaining. The Oswego State powerplay heads onto the ice for the first time this evening. The unit sits at a 22.3% completion percentage.
  • SUNY Geneseo kills off the Morgan penalty. The Ice Knights are one for one when shorthanded so far this game.

Second Period

  • GOALS:
  • GENESEO: Peter Morgan (EV) @ 3:55 from Domenic Garozzo and Bryan Zurowski
  • GENESEO: Dan Bosio (PP) @ 9:05 from Chris Perna (2) and Matthew Doran
  • GENESEO: Dan Bosio (2) (EV) @ 11:12 from Henry Cleghorn
  • OSWEGO: Connor Smart (EV) @ 18:43 from Connor Sleeth and Travis Broughman
  • GOALTENDING:
  • OSWEGO: Steven Kozikoski (15 saves on 19 shots)
  • GENESEO: Matt Petizian (16 saves on 16 shots)
  • Zurowski of Geneseo goes to the box for tripping. The Lakers head back to the powerplay just a little over a minute into the period.
  • SUNY Geneseo kills off the penalty. The Lakers are zero for two on the man advantage tonight.
  • Broughman with the best opportunity so far tonight for the Lakers with a rebound chance in front of the crease. Petizian dives out and makes the save. Faceoff to the left of him.
  • 3 on 1 rush leads to a goal that goes back behind Kozikoski and in the net. Morgan put it over the goaltender’s shoulder for his 17th goal of the contest.
  • Garrett Clegg dives out and blocks a puck off the face mask in the defensive zone. He immediately goes to the bench for a line change.
  • Tyler Flack goes to the penalty box with 11:49 remaining in the second period. The two-minute minor penalty is for slashing.
  • Dan Bosio redefects a shot on the powerplay to put Oswego State down by three in the second period. That is the second powerplay goal of the contest and the Ice Knights are two for two on the man advantage.
  • Bosio scores a second one after turnover from Mac Lewis in the high slot. The goal goes in low on the glove side. That is Bosio’s 22nd goal of the season.
  • Oswego State goes to the man advantage after a minor penalty to Domenic Garozoo. SUNY Geneseo is able to kill it once again and the Ice Knights are perfect when a man down.
  • Point blank opportunity from Tyler Flack in the low slot. Petizian with the save and Geneseo clears the rebound.
  • Connor Smart buries on a 3 on 2 rush after a drop pass from Connor Sleeth. The Lakers have some light after finally getting on the scoreboard as the period ends.

Third Period

  • GOALS:
  • GENESEO: Henry Cleghorn @ 17:29 from Alex Wilkins
  • GENESEO: Brendan Miller @ 19:53
  • GOALTENDING:
  • OSWEGO: Steven Kozikoski (25 saves on 30 shots)
  • GENESEO: Matt Petizian (23 saves on 24 shots)
  • With 12:49 remaining in regulation, Rocco Andreacchi goes to the box for boarding, The Lakers need a complete penalty kill to gain some momentum.
  • Oswego State kills the penalty. The short-handed squad is one for three tonight against the SUNY Geneseo powerplay.
  • Good opportunity with about ten minutes to go in the contest. Puck was eventually found by Petizian in the crease.
  • Tristian Francis gets involved on the rush and shoots a puck into the chest of Petizian with 8:30 remaining.
  • Shane Bull goes to the box for interference with 4:38 left to go in the third period. The minor penalty puts Oswego State back on the disadvantage with little time remaining.
  • Although Geneseo could not find the back of the net, the Ice Knights kill some valuable time and manage the game clock.
  • Kozikoski lets a soft one dribble in off a dump in from SUNY Geneseo. The crowd is one their feet now.
  • Empty net with two minutes remaining in the period.
  • Travis Broughman and Nathan Poolman go to the box for offsetting minor penalties. 4 on 4 hockey now with an Oswego State empty net. Both guys will stay in the box for the remainder of the contest.
  • Geneseo scores an empty netter to finish the game.

Post-game

  • Final Score: GEN 6 – 1 OSW
  • Oswego State failed to produce a lot of offense this game against SUNY Geneseo.
  • SUNY Geneseo moves onto the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
  • Oswego State’s 2021-22 season ends.
