Week in SA: week of Oct. 5

While The Oswegonian is financed by the Oswego State Student Association, all reporting of SA is unbiased through reporting of facts. SA meets virtually every Tuesday at 6 p.m. via Zoom. Meetings can be accessed with the following link: https://zoom.us/j/91262556247

1. Free COVID-19 testing for students on campus

The Oswego State campus is offering COVID-19 surveillance testing for all students throughout the semester in Lee Hall. Dr. Jerri Howland, Vice President Student Affairs and Dean of Students spoke to the Senate, saying that students on campus will be tested every three weeks. Howland said students will be tested in groups, so that all students may be routinely tested. Students will be notified by the school with information regarding their groups and testing times.

2. Flu shots being offered on campus

Howland also emphasized the importance of receiving a flu shot this year. Oswego State has set up a flu clinic, where shots are being offered to students for free in the Marano Campus Center. The clinic will be set up throughout the week and students are required to register online in advance of their appointment. The schedule for the clinic, as well as a link to register, can be found on the Oswego State Instagram page (@sunyoswego).

3. SA expects to record meetings

SA has proposed a motion [SLE.56.01] that would allow the use of a recording device throughout the duration of Senate meetings. Utilizing such devices would not be mandatory, with usage being left to the discretion of the committee chair. The motion has been proposed in order to allow the Senate to keep a more accurate record of minutes for the duration of legislative meetings. It will also ensure that records of public comment are as accurate as possible. The Senate is also inquiring about making such recordings available to the public.

4. Supreme Court looking to increase involvement

SA Supreme Court Chief Justice Matthew O’Donnell presented to the Senate, detailing the roles of the Supreme Court and how it can affect the student body at large. The Court works primarily to assist new clubs in establishing themselves, as well as revising existing club constitutions and bylaws. O’Donnell referred to the Court as “the forgotten branch of SA,” explaining that he hopes to raise awareness to the general student body of the purposes of the Supreme Court.

5. SA President gives report

In light of the recent ‘Off-Campus Housing 101’ webinar, SA President Lizeth Ortega-Ramirez said that SA hopes to plan similar workshops for the Spring 2021 semester during her report to the Senate. Ortega-Ramirez emphasized another topic in the country today, as she continues to urge students to ensure they are registered to vote in the upcoming election. Links to assist students with information regarding voting can be found on both the Vote Oswego website (voteoswego.com) and Instagram page (@voteoswego).
