‘Super Smash Brothers’ adds Steve from ‘Minecraft’ to roster

“Minecraft” being added to “Super Smash Brothers” used to be something of an outrageous inside joke among fans. Steve being the name given to the voiceless avatar that players control at the start of “Minecraft.” Since Minecrafts rise to fame, parody trailers of the game have included “Minecrafts'” main character, often evoking bizarre niche humor amongst fans, but it seems like Nintendo has chosen to cash in with the real deal.

On Thursday Oct. 1, “Super Smash Brothers” director Masahiro Sakurai unveiled a real trailer that brought “Minecraft” to the “Smash Bros” roster. Showcasing Nintendo front-runner Mario being attacked by creepers before watching Steve break down a wall and enter the fray.

Steve can attack with most items present in his home game. These attacks and weapons include swiping at opposing players with a sword or axe, crashing into them with a minecart, or flying around with an elytra, a specific pair of wings that players can find. Steve can also place blocks of TNT that can explode if hit or triggered through trip wires that he can set up. Steve’s signature ability lets him place blocks on the stage, which can keep him from falling off the map or creating walls to keep enemies from climbing back on the stage.

“Super Smash Brothers” is known for a competitive community that takes pride in strict tournament rules. Out of the 74 characters in the game, only a handful are considered reasonable for winning. This does not disallow the use of certain characters, but it does mean that Steve has an uphill battle if he wants to be used outside of his novelty, especially when fast characters tend to rule the game in all of its iterations.

The trailer showcased a ton of other iconic “Minecraft” features such as mining the terrain for resources, then building blocks and upgrading weapons with the materials. This has all been translated to work in a competitive setting by speeding up the process by a good margin. One can also choose to play as other “Minecraft” characters such as Alex, a zombie or an Enderman.

Outside of Steves inclusion, a new map and a set of songs will be added to “Super Smash Brothers.” Including remixes of preexisting songs. Something that has already excited the community around the game. This update is set to drop on Oct. 14.
