Laker Gameday Preview: Men’s hockey at The College at Brockport

The rough snowstorm that a majority of New York received will not stop the Oswego State men’s hockey team, as the Lakers start the weekend a little delayed with a game on the road at The College at Brockport tonight.

Oswego State was slated to play against SUNY Geneseo on Friday, but the game was postponed to Sunday after harsh winter conditions.

Against the Golden Eagles on Nov. 15, the Lakers won 4-1 with a three-assist performance from Joseph Molinaro, and two assists from Anthony Passero. Travis Broughman, Josh Zizek and Jody Sullivan all scored for Oswego State. David Richer made 21 saves in net, with 10 in the first period alone.

Jake Colosanti scored the lone goal for The College at Brockport, while Matt Schneider made 30 saves in the game. Colosanti scored on the power play.

The Golden Eagles’ game against SUNY Cortland last night was also postponed, and has not played since last Saturday in a non-league game against Bryn Athyn University. The College at Brockport won 4-2 behind four different goal scorers. Ryan Romeo, Robert Flannery, Kevin Mainello and Connor Hutchins all added goals. Hutchins’ and Romeo’s goals were both on the power play. Matt Schneider made 25 saves.

Players to Watch

Oswego State: Travis Broughman

In his first game back after missing last weekend due to undisclosed reasons, the sophomore is going into a weekend that is crucial for the Lakers with four big points on the line. While Sunday’s matchup is arguably a bigger game, this is merely the setup for the game against SUNY Geneseo so that Oswego State does not fall anymore and make it harder to potentially capture No. 1 in the SUNYAC. He is tied for the team-lead in points (21) and has had a pretty even year (11 goals, 10 assists). Expect Broughman to come out firing in his first game back.

The College at Brockport: Ryan Romeo

When your team’s leading scorer is a defenseman, that typically means a lot of the team’s scoring comes from the blue line. Ryan Romeo will be crucial in tonight’s game, trying to test Steven Kozikoski from the blue line. Granted, those shots are typically ones that goaltenders have to make, but with the physicality that the Golden Eagles play with, traffic shots may be the key difference for The College at Brockport.

SUNYAC Standings

Between a couple other games being postponed due to inclement weather, here are the current standings for the SUNYAC, after Feb. 6:

  1. SUNY Geneseo — 18 points (15-3-2 overall, 8-1-2 SUNYAC)
  2. Oswego State — 16 points (11-8-0 overall, 8-2-0 SUNYAC)
  3. Buffalo State — 13 points (10-8-2 overall, 6-4-1 SUNYAC)
  4. The College at Brockport — 12 points (13-7-0 overall, 6-5-0 SUNYAC)
  5. SUNY Potsdam — 11 points (6-15-1 overall, 5-8-1 SUNYAC)
  6. SUNY Cortland — 10 points (10-8-1 overall, 5-7-0 SUNYAC)
  7. Morrisville State — 10 points (8-11-0 overall, 5-7-0 SUNYAC)
  8. Plattsburgh State — 8 points (6-12-3 overall, 3-7-2 SUNYAC)
  9. SUNY Fredonia — 6 points (5-9-6 overall, 2-7-2 SUNYAC)

With the couple of postponements, here is the SUNYAC schedule for today, with what teams are playing tonight or their next game:

  • SUNY Geneseo, after having yesterday’s game waived off due to weather, will host SUNY Cortland for its senior night at 7 p.m.
  • Oswego State, also with a postponed game yesterday, heads to The College at Brockport for an afternoon matchup at 4 p.m.
  • Buffalo State will stay at home to take on Plattsburgh State for a 7 p.m. puck drop
  • The College at Brockport will host Oswego State at the Tuttle Ice Arena for a 4 p.m. start
  • SUNY Potsdam will head a little south after its game against Buffalo State and take on SUNY Fredonia with a 7 p.m. game
  • SUNY Cortland will travel to SUNY Geneseo and take on the No. 3 team in the nation, game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
  • Morrisville State will continue its non-league weekend with a road game against SUNY Canton with puck drop at 7 p.m.
  • Plattsburgh State takes on Buffalo State in Buffalo for a 7 p.m. start-time
  • SUNY Fredonia hosts SUNY Potsdam as the Blue Devils try to climb out of the basement of the SUNYAC with a 7 p.m. game

Prediction

Oswego State has not lost to The College at Brockport since Feb. 15, 2014, when the Lakers lost 3-2 at the Marano Campus Center. They also hold a 95-6-6 all-time record against the Golden Eagles, with the latest tie on Nov. 21, 2014, just that next fall.

The Lakers seem to have found a good amount of chemistry due to some new players stepping up, with Alex DiCarlo and Michael Gillespie both finding the back of the net pretty frequently within the last couple weeks. Josh Zizek has also scored some pretty big goals when needed, and has taken an extra leadership role by “taking ownership of the team,” according to head coach Ed Gosek, following the SUNY Cortland loss.

The biggest change, obviously, has been Steven Kozikoski in net. This weekend is one of his biggest tests, with a decent The College at Brockport squad, and then the dominant SUNY Geneseo squad tomorrow. Oswego State is at least coming into this game rested, with the game against the Knights from Friday being postponed to Sunday.

The Golden Eagles will be without Jake Colosanti tonight, one of their leading goal-scorers. Colosanti also scored the opening goal in the team’s 3-1 loss to Oswego State earlier this season. Matt Schneider will also be tested, with those different goalscorers from just a semester ago.

Final prediction: 4-1 Oswego State over The College at Brockport.
