Laker Gameday Preview: Men’s basketball vs. SUNY New Paltz

The Oswego State men’s basketball team (14-4, 8-3 SUNYAC) has won three games in a row, after losing back-to-back games to SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Potsdam. The wins have all come against SUNYAC opponents in Plattsburgh State, Buffalo State and SUNY Fredonia. Tuesday, the Lakers are back home, as they take on SUNY New Paltz (5-12, 1-9 SUNYAC). The Lakers still sit in fourth-place of the tough SUNYAC conference with seven more regular season games left to play.

Last Time Out

Oswego State defeated SUNY New Paltz on the road back on Jan. 14, by a score of 84-59. The Lakers dominated the game from the jump, as they took a 21-point lead into the half and never looked back. They ended up hitting 11 3-pointers as a team and finished with 26 points off turnovers. Liam Sanborn led the way for the Lakers with 22 points on 8-11 shooting. Three other Lakers hit the double-digit mark in points that night, as well as Jeremiah Sparks scored 17 points with Joe Sullivan and Brandan Gartland adding 12 and 10 points of their own. Tristan Wissemann scored 17 points for SUNY New Paltz in the loss.

Players to Watch

Oswego State: Jamal Achille

Achille has seen a major increase in minutes over the past two contests. His previous high for minutes in a game was eight minutes, in the first game of the season vs. Keystone College. His previous high for points in a game was also from the first game of the season, where he finished with six points. In the past two contests, Achille played 28 minutes vs. Buffalo State, finishing with 21 points and six rebounds, then vs. SUNY Fredonia, he played 22 minutes and finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Achille has been productive since he has seen more action, expect him to continue to earn some solid minutes, especially in a contest vs. a weaker SUNY New Paltz team.

SUNY New Paltz: Tristan Wissemann

Wissemann has been the most consistent player this year for the Hawks. He is currently their leading scorer, averaging 14.7 points per game. He also leads the team in 3-pointers made with 40. He recently scored 25 points against Buffalo State and has scored 10 or more points in the past 11 contests for the Hawks. After scoring 17 against the Lakers earlier in the season, expect Wissemann to come out aggressive and try and get his team going early.
