Laker Hockey Men's Hockey Sports

Laker Gameday Preview: Men’s hockey vs. SUNY Canton

The Oswego State men’s hockey team will look to bounce back against SUNY Canton following a 3-2 overtime loss to SUNY Cortland last night. The Lakers have now fallen back to .500 on the season, after suffering their second league loss of the season.

The Roos are not to be taken lightly, despite Oswego State’s all-time record of 11-0-0 against them. SUNY Canton was ranked for a brief time earlier this season, received 12 votes this week and is 14th in the Div. III PairWise rankings.

In last season’s tilt between Oswego State and SUNY Canton, the Lakers came away with a 6-2 win to secure the Pathfinder Bank/Oswego State Hockey Classic championship. Tanner Spink had two goals and an assist and Josh Zizek had three assists in the game. David Richer went 18-20 in net.

Former Laker Tyson Bruce scored for the Roos in the loss. He, along with Jesse Farabee and A.J. D’Orazio, will all be representing SUNY Canton in tonight’s game. Bruce left halfway through last season, just in time for the game against the Lakers, while Farabee and D’Orazio joined SUNY Canton this season.

Last Time Out

Oswego State

The Lakers suffered their first league setback since the infamous 9-1 loss to SUNY Geneseo earlier this season. The Red Dragons opened up scoring, but Josh Zizek and Tyson Kirkby, on the power play, responded within four minutes of each other to take the lead. Logan Blaser’s power-play goal at 13:16 of the third period sent the game into overtime. Martin Lavallee secured the win with just 58 seconds to go in the five-minute period. Zizek also added an assist, while Broughman tacked on two of his own. Carson Vance had the secondary assist on the Zizek goal. David Richer went 25-28 in net.

SUNY Canton

SUNY Canton took its second straight loss after a 4-1 loss to Albertus Magnus College last night. Bailey Conklin scored his first goal of the season at 10:29 of the second period, but it was not enough to overcome Albertus Magnus College’s then-two-goal lead. Zach Ahola and Max Routledge both recorded assists on the Conklin goal. Austin Washkurak made 19 saves on 23 shots.

Players to Watch

OSW: Steven Kozikoski

This game will be sophomore goaltender Steven Kozikoski’s first collegiate start. He has played in the exhibition games for a period, but this is also his first legitimate NCAA game. It will be interesting to see how he responds against a team like SUNY Canton, who has been receiving national votes, and to see what Oswego State can possibly expect in the future with both David Richer and Cedric Hansen graduating after this season.

CAN: Jesse Farabee

There are a couple reasons for Jesse Farabee. One, is the obvious, where he is a former Oswego State forward who did not get much playing time last year and ended up leaving halfway through the season. He leads the Roos with 12 goals and seems to have found himself a new role on his new team, adding an offensive spark to a team that is receiving national votes and is No. 14 in the PairWise.

SUNYAC Update

Here are the updated SUNYAC standings following Friday, Jan. 24, with a bunch of league teams playing:

  1. SUNY Geneseo — 13 points (13-3-1 overall, 6-1-1 SUNYAC)
  2. Oswego State — 12 points (8-8-0 overall, 6-2-0 SUNYAC)
  3. The College at Brockport — 12 points (12-6-0 overall, 6-4-0 SUNYAC)
  4. Morrisville State — 10 points (8-8-0 overall, 5-4-0 SUNYAC)
  5. Buffalo State — 8 points (8-7-1 overall, 4-3-0 SUNYAC)
  6. SUNY Cortland — 8 points (8-7-1 overall, 4-6-0 SUNYAC)
  7. Plattsburgh State — 7 points (6-9-2 overall, 3-4-1 SUNYAC)
  8. SUNY Potsdam — 5 points (3-14-1 overall, 2-7-1 SUNYAC)
  9. SUNY Fredonia — 3 points (4-8-4 overall, 1-6-1 SUNYAC)

Here is the schedule of SUNYAC teams either playing tonight or the team’s next game:

  • SUNY Geneseo takes on Plattsburgh State at home tonight for a 7 p.m. game
  • Oswego State will host SUNY Canton (non-league) for a 7 p.m. matchup tonight
  • The College at Brockport hosts SUNY Potsdam at the Tuttle Ice Arena for a 4 p.m. game
  • Morrisville State takes on Buffalo State for the second game of the weekend series for a 7 p.m. puck-drop
  • Buffalo State will stay in Morrisville for the grudge match against the Mustangs for a 7 p.m. game
  • SUNY Cortland will host Hamilton College (non-league) tonight for a 5 p.m. start
  • Plattsburgh State will continue the Rochester-area road trip with a game against SUNY Geneseo at 7 p.m.
  • SUNY Potsdam travels to The College at Brockport tonight for a 4 p.m. puck-drop
  • SUNY Fredonia will stay in Stevenson, Maryland, to finish the weekend series against Stevenson University for a 3 p.m. start

Prediction

This is Oswego State’s last chance to figure out the strategy going into the rest of the season before SUNYAC play resumes for the rest of the season, with the non-league game against SUNY Canton. The Lakers will also try to avoid falling below .500—similar to the game against Nazareth College.

SUNY Canton should not be taken lightly either, despite the 11-0-0 all-time record for the Lakers. With former Oswego State players finding success on the Roos’ roster, especially Jesse Farabee who leads the team with 12 goals, it should be interesting.

Jeff Solow is back on defense, with Mac Lewis as the extra skater tonight. Joseph Molinaro is back in the starting forwards, and Derek Brown is scratched, which is a little unusual. However, the bigger note is Steven Kozikoski getting his first collegiate start, giving Oswego State potentially a glimpse in the future what it has for a netminder.

Prediction: SUNY Canton takes this one 4-3.
