Players to Watch

OSW: Mac Lewis

It is cliche to put a new player as the one to watch in his first game. But, he is joining a team that has struggled as of late, winning last week for the first time since Dec. 7. Oswego State only has one non-league game for the rest of the season, which is tomorrow against SUNY Canton. Lewis is entering the season at a crucial point for the Lakers, and he might be the grinding fourth liner that they have been looking for, to round out this offense.

COR: Nick Modica

This entire season, Nick Modica has been a key point for a lot of the Red Dragons’ success when they find it. Defeating teams like Norwich University in a shootout, or Salve Regina just the day prior, his ability to stop the puck will be huge against a team like Oswego State. With a .917 save percentage, he might be tough to beat for the Oswego State forwards.

Prediction

Just because Oswego State won the last game against SUNY Cortland earlier this season, that does not prove anything heading into this matchup. The Red Dragons have beaten teams that the Lakers lost to, like Save Regina University. On the same token, SUNY Cortland has also fallen to SUNY Fredonia in a tight matchup, similar to the Lakers’ 5-4 win over the Blue Devils.

This game marks an important stretch for the Lakers, who only have one non-league game for the rest of the season. Every two points in this league are crucial, and the game against SUNY Cortland is no different.

Players other than Travis Broughman and Anthony Passero have to find the back of the net, while making sure not to commit crucial mistakes in the defensive zone, which was the Lakers’ downfall against Utica College just a couple weeks ago. Oswego State cannot just rely on David Richer to bail them out time and time again.

SUNY Cortland has been hot as of late, with some crucial wins. The Red Dragons have not seen the loss column since Dec. 6 against SUNY Fredonia, which includes a tie against Norwich University. They will be fighting for two more league points as well, trying to climb up the standings.

Prediction: 5-3 Oswego State with an empty-net goal.
