Players to Watch

OSW: Megan Teachout

Associate head coach Mark Digby said it best last week after the loss to Plattsburgh State, that if Megan Teachout can be consistent with her “power forward” like moves, as a bigger player who is tough to take down, she is going to have a great career at Oswego State. After suffering a loss last week against a strong league opponent, that play needs to start now as the Lakers look to get two more crucial league points in order to secure a home game in the semifinals of the NEWHL playoffs.

COR: Grace Schnorr

There seems to be two tiers of players on this SUNY Cortland team: Grace Schnorr (23 points) and Dany Donegan (22 points), and then everyone else. Schnorr had two goals in the two games against Oswego State earlier this season, and also scored last week against Buffalo State. Expect the team’s leading scorer to not let her team go down easy.

NEWHL Update

Here are the current standings from the Northeast Women’s Hockey League as of Wednesday, Jan. 21:

  1. Plattsburgh State — 26 points (18-1-0 overall, 13-0-0 NEWHL)
  2. Oswego State — 13 points (9-4-1 overall, 6-3-1 NEWHL)
  3. SUNY Cortland — 11 points (11-4-1, 5-4-1 NEWHL)
  4. SUNY Potsdam — 10 points (7-8-0 overall, 5-5-0 NEWHL)
  5. Morrisville State — 10 points (7-9-1 overall, 4-5-1 NEWHL)
  6. Buffalo State — 2 points (3-13-0 overall, 1-8-0 NEWHL)
  7. SUNY Canton — 1 point (3-11-1 overall, 0-9-1 NEWHL)

Here is a list of the teams playing today / their next game:

  • Plattsburgh State plays against SUNY Potsdam next Wednesday on the road for a 7 p.m. puck drop
  • Oswego State travels to SUNY Cortland tonight for a 7 p.m. game
  • SUNY Cortland hosts Oswego State tonight for a 7 p.m. start time
  • SUNY Potsdam travels to NEWHL opponent SUNY Canton tonight for a 7 p.m. game
  • Morrisville State will travel to Buffalo State on Saturday for a matinee game at 1 p.m.
  • Buffalo State hosts Morrisville State on Saturday for a 1 p.m. puck drop
  • SUNY Canton hosts SUNY Potsdam tonight for a 7 p.m. game

Final Thoughts

This matchup either has Oswego State winning the season series, or allowing SUNY Cortland to potentially “even split” the series, either with a win or a tie against the Lakers. While the Lakers do have two points on second place, SUNY Cortland is in third with 11 points, fighting for home-ice advantage later this season in the playoffs.

Oswego State needs to put last Wednesday behind them, knowing that Plattsburgh State is No. 1 in the country, and has yet to lose a NEWHL game since the first season during the 2017-2018 season. A 3-1 loss is nothing to be ashamed of, stopping an offense that is averaging nearly five goals per game.

The Red Dragons will look to keep the momentum running, after taking down Buffalo State for two crucial NEWHL points on Saturday, as they try to tie the Lakers in the standings.
