Players to Watch

OSW: Sara Cruise

After being out for a lot of the first half of the season, Sara Cruise has totaled six points in five games, including a hat trick against King’s College in the Lakers’ 9-0 win on Jan. 8. The sophomore also had an assist that game. Now that Cruise seems to have gotten her feet under her, a tough opponent in Plattsburgh State and a lot of league play for the rest of the season awaits last year’s rookie of the year, voted by her teammates and coaches.

PLA: Annie Katonka

Annie Katonka has three goals in the last two games, along with an assist. After the Cardinals’ most recent game against Buffalo State, Katonka has reached the 20-point mark for the third time in as many years. Her freshman year, she reached 23 points and last year she had 54 in a first-time All-American campaign. She has only been held pointless twice: once against Adrian College on Jan. 6, and again on Nov. 13 against SUNY Potsdam.

Final Thoughts

Plattsburgh State is the favorite here, plain and simple. A team that has won 30-straight NEWHL and won both of the league championships is nothing less than dominant. However, the last team to beat/tie Plattsburgh State in-conference? Oswego State, during the 2017-2018 season. While it was two years ago and it is always harped on, there is good reason for it.

The Lakers improved in just two games against Plattsburgh State, going from 7-1 to 3-0. Head coach Diane Dillon and associate head coach Mark Digby said the team truly saw where stood in terms of playing against the top tier teams following the weekend series against the Cardinals.

Both of Oswego State’s conference losses came against Plattsburgh State, and, despite the tie against SUNY Cortland, the Lakers have truly dominated the rest of the NEWHL scene. With a strong freshman class between Morgan Shines and Meghan Teachout, along with upperclassmen such as Philomena Teggart, Eryn Stewart and Amber Thomas, this is such a well-rounded team. And, Rachael Farmer knows what to expect from a tough opponent.

Now, the Lakers have the advantage of home ice—exactly where the tie against the Cardinals happened just two seasons ago.
