Laker Gameday Preview: Women’s Hockey vs. King’s College

The Oswego State women’s hockey team is set to play its first game in a month, after a 3-0 shutout loss to Amherst College. The Lakers will face King’s College, who is coming off a 5-1 loss to Post University and will look to start off the new year in the win column.

Keys to the Game

Oswego State

Scoring early will be the key to Oswego State getting a win this afternoon. The Lakers are coming off of a game where they struggled to capitalize on many offensive opportunities. After a month of not playing games, they will look to turn around their offensive struggles against a subpar King’s College who have only won one game so far this year.

King’s College

The penalty kill will be the key to King’s College getting a win this afternoon. The Monarchs have allowed 13 power play goals this season and cannot allow the Lakers to convert on any power play opportunities. Oswego State enters the game with a talented power play unit that is ranked third in the Northeast Women’s Hockey League. The Monarchs have to play a very disciplined and strong defensive game in order to leave Oswego with their second win of the season.

Players to Watch

Oswego State: Eryn Stewart

One of the Lakers leading scorers will look to find the back of the net after a shutout loss before going on winter break. If the Lakers are to have an offensive surge against King’s College this afternoon, they will look to one of their upperclassmen to lead the way.

King’s College: Caitlin Redden

One of the Monarchs leading goal scorers had a quiet game against Post University and will need to be heavily involved in the offense if her team is to beat Oswego State. Before the Monarchs last game against Post, Redden had a two goal game against Alvernia University. She will need to have a similar game against the Lakers.

Final Thoughts

On paper, Oswego State is the heavy favorites to win this game. However, King’s College are looking to have a strong second half of their season and will look to start that with a win against the Lakers. King’s College looks to be the perfect remedy for a bounce back game for Oswego State, who has scored just two goals in its last two games.
