Laker Quick Recap: No. 12 Men’s hockey at Buffalo State

The No. 12 Oswego State men’s hockey team took on Buffalo State at the Buffalo State Ice Arena. The Lakers were victorious in the SUNYAC matchup by a score of 5-0.

FIRST PERIOD

  • With 15:02 left in the first period, Oswego State went on the penalty kill for the first time after Mitch Emerson was called for boarding. The Lakers killed the penalty.
  • With 6:39 left in the opening period, Josh Zizek was called for a tripping minor. Oswego State, again, killed the penalty.
  • END 1: Oswego State and Buffalo State were tied at zero.

SECOND PERIOD

  • The Lakers went on their first power play 50 seconds into the period after a two-minute slashing call on Colin O’Connor of Buffalo State.
  • Josh Zizek scored the game’s opening goal on the power play at 2:08 of the second period. The goal hit the pads of Emil Norrman and trickled in. Colton Fletcher and Carson Vance were credited with the assists.
  • At 5:22, Carson Vance added another goal from the blue line after a snipe-like shot found the back of the net to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. Tyler Antonucci and Tyson Kirkby had the assists on the goal.
  • With 9:57 left in the second period, O’Connor took his second penalty of the game after an interference call, sending the Lakers to the power play for the second time in the game. Buffalo State killed the penalty.
  • With 3:18 left in the second period, Michael Guerrera was called for interference after awkwardly hitting Colton Fletcher into the boards. Oswego State went to the power play for the third time. The Bengals killed the penalty.
  • At the end of the second period, Oswego State led Buffalo State 2-0 after the Zizek power-play goal and the Vance even-strength goal.

THIRD PERIOD

  • At 4:20 of the third period, Travis Broughman and Michael Gillespie had a two-on-one breakaway. Broughman kept the shot for himself to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead. Gillespie and Max Novick were given the assists on the goal.
  • With 14:36 left in the period, Colton Fletcher was called for a two-minute slashing minor, sending Oswego State to the penalty kill for the third time of the game. The penalty was killed.
  • Immediately after the penalty ended with 12:33 left in the period, Broughman drew a slashing call on a breakaway. Ben Butcher was called for the penalty. That penalty was killed.
  • O’Connor was sent to the penalty box for a slashing call, giving the Lakers a 5-on-3 power play opportunity for 31 seconds. It was O’Connor’s third penalty of the night. Buffalo State killed the penalty.
  • At 11:47, Jody Sullivan was called for a two-minute slash, sending Oswego State to the penalty kill once again during the game. The penalty was negated after a Buffalo State penalty.
  • Andrew Logar cancelled out the Buffalo State power play after an interference call with 7:35 remaining in the regulation period. Four-our-on-four hockey would last for 1:23. The Lakers’ shortened power play was to no avail.
  • At 14:28, Broughman added his second goal of the night in the high slot with another laser past Norrman. Tyler Currie and Anthony Passero were given the assist.
  • With 4:36 remaining in the regulation period, Joseph Molinaro scored a back-door goal after the original Tyson Kirkby shot rebounded off of Norrman’s pads. Kirkby and Currie with the assists.
  • FINAL SCORE: 5-0 Lakers win in regulation over the Bengals.

POST-GAME

  • Oswego State (6-3-0, 5-1-0 SUNYAC) will visit SUNY Fredonia on Saturday for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
  • Buffalo State (5-4-0, 3-2-0 SUNYAC) will host SUNY Cortland on Saturday for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
