Laker Gameday Preview: No. 5 Men’s hockey vs. SUNY Potsdam (Game 1 of 2)
Continuing Whiteout Weekend for the Oswego State men’s hockey team (2-0-0, 2-0-0 SUNYAC), the Lakers will host SUNY Potsdam (0-2-1, 0-2-1 SUNYAC) at the Marano Campus Center Saturday night.
In both of last season’s matchups between the Lakers and Bears, Oswego State won. During the matchup in Oswego, Josh Zizek recorded a hat trick and an assist in the 5-2 victory. Michael Gillespie recorded a goal and three assists. Cedric Hansen recorded 17 saves in the game. In Potsdam, Oswego State won 3-2, and Max Novick recorded three assists. David Richer made 28 saves in the game, including 15 in the third period.
Last Time Out
OSW: The Lakers hosted Plattsburgh State and had their first shutout of the season in a 3-0 win. Anthony Passero, Carter Allen and Tyler Currie all scored for the Lakers. With the defensive scoring, which also included an assist from Jeff Solow, head coach Ed Gosek said it added a “new dimension” to the team’s scoring, something they have not had in recent seasons. The Lakers also were more disciplined, only committing five penalties. Three of the penalties put Oswego State short-handed, but it killed all three penalties. The Lakers went 0-2 on the power play. David Richer made 25 saves in net, with 15 of them alone in the third period.
POT: The Bears are still searching for their first win after falling 4-2 against SUNY Cortland Friday night. Ben Thompson and Robert Clerc, who transferred out of Oswego State halfway through last season as a freshman. Dan Panzeca and Tyler Young both recorded assists. Michael Paglucca made 36 saves in the loss, stopping 17 shots in the second period. The Bears went 0-3 on the power play but killed all three of their penalties.

Players to Watch
OSW: Josh Zizek
After last season’s hat trick at home against SUNY Potsdam, Josh Zizek has continued his dominance over the Bears in the last couple seasons. In two games last season, he registered five points (3g, 2a) against SUNY Potsdam. He also recorded a goal against the Bears during his sophomore campaign, but did not play against them his first year as a Laker. Tonight, he is on a line with Jody Sullivan and Joseph Molinaro, both players who can rack up the points. The second line has been quiet in the opening games, outside of the exhibition games with Jody Sullivan scoring short-handed.

POT: Robert Clerc
Robert Clerc never got the opportunity to play at Oswego State and transferred to SUNY Potsdam during the winter break between semesters. In eight games played he recorded five points, tallying four goals and an assist. This season already, he has four points in three games to lead the team. He is tied for the team-lead in goals with two, and leads the team with two assists. In his first game back to the Marano Campus Center, expect Clerc to make an impact for the Bears.

Prediction / Final Predictions
Oswego State, outside of the end of the 2017-2018 regular season, has had a lot of recent success against SUNY Potsdam. The Lakers hold a 71-29-2 record all-time against the Bears, including a 36-13-2 record while at home, between the Marano Campus Center and the Romney Field House.
It is also important to note that Josh Zizek had that hat trick last season against SUNY Potsdam at home. While no one can expect him to repeat, it has to be on his mind of his recent success against the Bears. Also on the Bears is former Laker Michael McArthur, who only played in one game during his freshman year. He did not play Friday against SUNY Cortland and only has one shot on the season.
Riding off the moment from the win against Plattsburgh State, as well as taking advantage of SUNY Potsdam falling to the Red Dragons, the Lakers need to keep the offensive pressure going. They now know they can get some offensive production from their defensemen, but should not rely on those players to bail them out. SUNY Potsdam also is not a high-scoring team, but the defense will need to stand tall like it did against the Cardinals, helping Cedric Hansen out a lot. Eyes need to be on Hansen as well, since this is his first game of the regular season.
Prediction: Oswego State takes this one 5-2.
