Breaking Down Spotify’s ‘New Music Friday’ Playlist: Oct. 11

Friday, Oct. 11, Spotify updated its weekly ‘New Music Friday’ playlist. This week’s edition includes another new 98 musical releases featuring new songs from chart-topping artists such as French Montana, Sam Hunt, Green Day and The Black Eyed Peas.

For the past few weeks, fans have noticed that Spotify had been putting in a variety of musical styles. However, this week they have taken it to a whole new level. American rock band The Neighbourhood (“Honest”) released a new track this week titled “Yellow Box.” The song serves as part of the soundtrack of the video game “DEATH STRANDING.” The lyrics discuss the possibility of getting a second chance in life, which also aligns with the theme of the video game. Although, video games and songs that describe such delicate topics might be considered twice prior to their release.

If that music style does not match listeners preferences, some country music made the list this week. Georgia-born singer and songwriter Sam Hunt (“House Party”), has new music in store for his fans. Hunt’s new tune, “Kinfolks” currently serves as a stand-alone. Traditionally, country music has discussed topics such as relationships, losing a house or losing a car. However, the theme of this song is quite the opposite. Its chorus suggests that Hunt has met someone and wants to introduce that person to his family and his friends, so that the person becomes a part of Hunt’s circle.

As for punk rock music, Green Day (“Boulevard Of Broken Dreams”) dropped a new track last Friday as well. Their new single, “Fire, Ready, Aim,” serves as the second single for their upcoming studio album “Father Of All…,” following their lead single, which is named after the upcoming studio album. Its lyrics mock how people often take action without thinking of the possible consequences, and also serves as the opening theme song for the 2019-2020 NBCSN’s “Wednesday Night Hockey.”

If listeners are looking for a mix of rap, latino and electronic music in both English and Spanish all at once, then The Black Eyed Peas’ (“I Gotta Feeling”) new single “RITMO” featuring latin-pop ace J Balvin (“Mi Gente”) will fulfill that need. After the quartet went separate ways back in 2010, the trio –now without vocalist Fergie– is back on the road. After having released several singles through the course of the past year, “RITMO” is their latest hit. The song also revives “The Rhythm Of The Night” by Corona’s chorus. Its videoclip features cut scenes from the soon-to-come film “Bad Boys For Life.”

Given the complete selection that Spotify has provided its users with last week, Friday, Oct. 11’s “New Music Friday playlist” would earn five stars out of the maximum five. The playlist fulfilled the gaps in all music styles and genres possible for listeners of all likes.
