Laker Gameday Preview: Women’s hockey vs. No. 10 Williams College
Oswego State finishes its third game this week when it, once again, welcomes in Williams College to the Marano Campus Center. Yesterday afternoon was another loss for the Lakers, coming at 3-2. Oswego State has now lost five out of its last six games and is left searching for answers.
Last Time Out
Oswego State / Williams College
As previously mentioned, the Lakers fell 3-2 yesterday afternoon to Williams College. The Ephs got the scoring started early with a goal by Abby Brustad and added a second off the stick of Annie Rush. The scoring output continued in the third period with a tally from Anna Fucillo. However, the Lakers would dominate the remainder of the third period. Avery Webster began with a goal to cut the lead to 3-1, and Katelynn Ferguson scored her third goal of the season with just 7 seconds remaining in the third period. It was too little too late for the Lakers, but the momentum will hopefully carry over into today. Cassie Shokar was solid in net to the tune of 36 saves on 39 shots. It remains to be seen who will be in-between the pipes on Sunday.

Keys to the Game
Oswego State
The Lakers cannot get behind early if they want to win tonight. Williams College jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:36 into the first period. After that, it was two more unanswered goals from the Ephs to put the Lakers in a 3-0 hole. Oswego State has not had enough offensive production this year to be playing from that big of a hole. They have to jump out of the gates early on Sunday afternoon.
Williams College
Williams College will need a bigger game from Meghan Halloran. Halloran was held silent by the Lakers yesterday, and it was a rare pointless night from the Ephs star. Oswego State game planned her well yesterday, but with fatigue starting to set in, we could see a breakout game from Halloran. A 3-2 win is nice, but it could have been a lot better with production from their star player.
Players to Watch
OSW: Skylar Byrne
Byrne only has three points so far in her freshman year, but she has been high impact on the all-freshman second line alongside Sara Cruise and Annika Neufeld-Kreider. She registered an assist in last weekend’s win over Buffalo State on a goal by Neufeld-Kreider, and it could be a similar game for her this afternoon.
WIL: Abby Brustad
Even without production from the aforementioned Meghan Halloran, the Ephs second highest point scorer had a big game. Brustad scored the first goal of the night for Williams College and assisted on the Ephs second goal. She now has an even 10 goals and 10 assists on the season.
Final Thoughts
Today’s rare Sunday afternoon for the Lakers presents yet another tough matchup. Not only against the opponent, No. 10/10 Williams College, but from a fatigue level as well. This will be Oswego State’s third game this week, and they have another quick turnaround with a huge NEWHL matchup with SUNY Cortland coming to town on Wednesday.
Williams College is a tough team to play back to back, and the Lakers realize this. If the Ephs score first, it will be a long afternoon for Oswego State. The Lakers did a good job slowing down Halloran but stopping a player of her caliber two days in a row is a tall task for Oswego State.
