Michelle Obama comes clean in new book

Michelle Obama can write about whatever she wants. It is her story to share, and people have no right to try to censor her for sharing certain intimate details of her own life.

Obama, arguably one of the most iconic women of the 21st century, published her memoir “Becoming” officially Nov. 13.

In her memoir, she touches on many sensitive topics as she discusses all the experiences, both good and bad, that shaped her into the woman she is today. Since the promotion of the memoir and now publication of her book, many people have started to question why Obama would write about her use of medical treatments to help her conceive her two daughters, Sasha and Malia.

The fact that there is always the concern that people may have an issue with Obama disclosing her own personal triumphs and struggles is absurd. It is her choice of what she shares, and she is brave for doing it. It is clear that there is still a stigma toward women who need fertility assistance. While, as a society, we have grown away from the medieval solution of killing women who cannot reproduce, there are still those who look down on those who need clinical help. This alone is ridiculous. It can be crushing for a want-to-be mom to find out she has fertility issues and therefore may never be able to conceive her own child. The last thing a woman needs is hateful comments or whispers from those around her.

The fact that Obama is willing to write about this sensitive topic in her book in an effort to reach out to these women and show them there is hope and they are not alone is remarkable. Not many people, male or female, would have the guts to expose their innermost struggles, especially someone with such prominence and outreach as Obama.

Obama has become well-known as one of the most powerful advocates for families in the U.S. and around the world and has done notable work toward promoting healthier life choices for families such as “World Day of Play” and wiser nutrition choices.

It is commendable that Obama is using her prominence as a public figure to make a difference and continue her work, advocating and supporting women and girls as well as the nation as a whole.  It is never expected for someone to share something so personal, and while some may take a cynical look at this as a way for the Obama’s to stay relevant, it is important to remember that there are people who do good for good. Obama is exposing herself in an effort to reach out to and give hope to others.

For those who have a problem with Obama’s book, there is a really simply solution: just do not read it. The rest of us will be proud of her for exposing herself in this way for the interests of those around her and showing that women with fertility issues are not alone.
