Earlier this summer, director James Gunn, best known for his work as the director of the Marvel hit movies “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” was fired by Disney, after a series of offensive tweets from 2009-10 resurfaced.
The tweets were publicly displayed by alt-right blogger Mike Cernovich after Gunn had continued to criticize President Donald Trump. The tweets, referencing rape, pedophilia and other crude humor, were determined to be “indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values,” said Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn in a statement.
The news of Gunn’s firing caused public outcry, especially from the cast and crew members from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films. The group of actors, which consists of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff, penned a letter to Disney, showing their support and asking for Gunn to be reinstated for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” which was planned to finish production in time for a May 2020 release.
One of the aforementioned actors, Bautista, who portrays Drax in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” has taken his displeasure with Gunn’s firing further, threatening to quit the planned third film if they do not use the original script that Gunn had written over the past few years. Recently, on Sept. 1, while appearing as a guest on the Jonathan Ross show, Bautista doubled down on his stance against Disney, saying that talking about the situation makes for a “bitter conversation.”
“They’re putting the movie off. It’s on hold indefinitely,” Bautista said. “To be honest with you, I don’t know if I want to work for Disney.”
Fellow guest on the show, comedian Kevin Hart, attempted to sway the conversation away from the controversy with little success, as Bautista continued to tell Ross that he has been very vocal about the way he feels. Bautista also informed Ross during the talk show of the personal reasons for which he has taken such an unwavering position.
“James really changed my life, so it’s a personal thing, too” Bautista said. “I struggled. I starved for three years. I could barely get a job. There were a few people who believed in me along the way, but James was the one who really changed the course of my life.”
It is unknown whether Bautista’s threats of quitting are authentic, but it is becoming increasingly clear the displeasure that he feels, and his opinion of Disney is getting increasingly more toxic. The planned release of the third volume is looking more doubtful by the day, as Disney is keeping firm on its decision to cut ties with Gunn.
