Laker Men’s Hockey Quick Recap: Vs Plattsburgh State

The Plattsburgh Cardinals upset No. 3/4 Oswego State 1-0 to hand the Lakers their second consecutive home loss to an unranked opponent. The Lakers end the weekend and the regular season with back to back home shutout losses with the SUNYAC playoffs coming up next weekend.

The first half of the opening period was back and forth until Plattsburgh’s Evan Lindquist was called for the games first penalty. At 8:56 of the first, Lindquist went to the box for interference giving the Lakers their first power play chance of the night. The Lakers failed to capitalize on that powerplay keeping the game scoreless early on.

The Lakers got another chance on the man advantage when Rich McCartney was called for boarding with less than 5 minutes remaining in the period. The Lakers didn’t score on that power play either, but with 29.9 seconds remaining in the first period, Ross Sloan was assessed a 5 minute major for boarding. Oswego State began the second period with 4:31 remaining on the major penalty to Sloan, but could not cash in on the chance.

With 3:49 remaining in the second period, Laker forward Cameron Berry was sent to the penalty box for cross checking. Plattsburgh State could not convert on their first powerplay of the night. Oswego State controlled the tempo for most of the second period. The Lakers outshot the Cardinals 22-7, but the Lakers could not breakthrough as the game entered the third tied 0-0.

Less than three minutes into the third period, Plattsburgh’s Mike Falanga was penalized for interference. At 5:58 of the third, Plattsburgh was penalized for having too many men on the ice. Plattsburgh was successful in killing the penalty, extending the Lakers streak of failed power plays to 16 in the process.

Midway through the third with 9:06 remaining, Laker defenseman Carter Allen was called for interference making a big hit against the boards. The Lakers killed the penalty to keep the game scoreless.

Offsetting roughing penalties were called on Plattsburgh’s Jacob Engvall and Oswego State’s Carter Allen with 6:26 left in regulation.

With 3:13 left in the third , Plattsburgh’s Liam Lawson scored the game’s first goal to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals held onto that lead following a late Laker penalty to win the game and split the season series with Oswego State 1-1.

Oswego State outshot Plattsburgh 35-10, but failed to score a single goal on Jimmy Poreda who made all 35 saves for the Cardinals.

The Lakers end the regular season with a 18-5-2 record going into their home SUNYAC playoff semifinal matchup next Saturday Feb. 17.
