Lakers Game Day Preview: No. 4/4 Men’s hockey vs. No. 7/7 SUNY Geneseo
Chance To Clinch
All it is going to take for No. 4/4 Oswego State to clinch their second consecutive SUNYAC regular season title is something the Lakers have done in 11 of 12 conference games so far this season, win. With two points tonight, Oswego State will have 25 points total. No. 7/7 SUNY Geneseo can get to 25 points if they win out, so with a loss tonight they will be relegated to the second or third seed come playoff time.
History
In recent years these two teams have had some high quality, high stakes contests and tonight should be no different. Earlier this season on Dec. 1 at the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena, the Ice Knights and the Lakers came to a 2-2 tie. This was the only time Oswego State did not come away with an outright win in a conference game this season.
Herlihey Watch
With just five guaranteed games remaining in the senior captains career, Mitch Herlihey is just two points away from reaching the 100 point milestone. If he can put two more points on the scoresheet throughout the next four games, he will be the only player on this seasons roster to reach 100 points.
Lineup Card
OSW-
GEN-
Players to Watch
OSW- Aaron Huffnagle
The sophomore is coming off a healthy scratch last weekend against the College at Brockport and is looking to regain his early season form where he was one of the most prominent players in the Lakers offense.
GEN- Conlan Keenan
Keenan has put up a line of 15-19-34 through 22 games this season. That is impressive. The former New Jersey Hitmen forward is capable of taking over any game and tonight should be no different in such a huge contest for his team.
Prediction
Two of the SUNYAC’s most successful coaches, Ed Gosek and Chris Schultz, will be facing off tonight. It is difficult to bet against either of them. However, there is a game to be played on the ice. On the ice, the Lakers have shown they get the job done at the Marano Campus Center Ice Arena, so tonight should continue that. It will likely be one of the toughest games either team will play all season, but home ice and a late empty net goal should be enough to Oswego State the edge.
Oswego State wins 3-1.
