Laker Quick Recap: Women’s hockey vs. No. 1/2 Plattsburgh State

On Feb. 3, the Oswego State Lakers took on the No. 1/2 Plattsburgh State Cardinals in an afternoon matchup. In a 2-2 tie for the Lakers, they are now 8-11-2 on the season with a 4-7-1 conference record. Plattsburgh State is now 17-2-1 overall, and 11-0-1 in the NEWHL.

Oswego State started things off early, with captain Olivia Ellis opening up scoring at 6:23 of the first period. She took a slap shot in the slot right in front of Brooke Wolejko and bounced the puck off of the crossbar. In her seventh goal of the season, Andrea Noss and Philomena Teggart were credited with the assists.

At 13:30, Plattsburgh State’s Melissa Sheeran was called for a tripping minor, giving the Lakers their first power play opportunity of the game. The Cardinals were able to kill the penalty, despite some strong play from Kate Randazzo and Laura Thacker. Randazzo’s shot hit the crossbar and bounced back.

The opening period would end in Oswego State’s favor, 1-0. Emma Morisette was perfect on the faceoff, going 5-5. No leader would emerge on the shot total.

To start off the middle period, Philomena Teggart would commit a bodychecking penalty at 10:09. Seconds later, Jordan Emerson was called for tripping, putting the Cardinals at a two-man advantage for around a minute. The Lakers were able to kill the Teggart penalty.

With two seconds left on the Teggart penalty, however, Victoria Blake was called for cross-checking. This put the Lakers at an extended 5-on-3 penalty kill.

Courtney Moriarty tied the game at 12:47 of the second period while the second 5-on-3 was going on. Melissa Sheeran and Hanna Kiraly both had the assists. It was Moriarty’s team-leading 19th goal of the season.

The Lakers were able to kill the Blake penalty to keep the game tied.

More penalties would accrue during the game, with a bench minor for too many players going to Plattsburgh State. The Lakers were unsuccessful on the power play, despite producing some shots. Teggart would go back to the box at 16:43 after a holding call. The Lakers killed the penalty, as well.

Emma Morisette continued her dominance at the faceoff circle, going 6-7 through 40 minutes. Thacker, Ellis, and Teggart all had two shots after the second period.

With a quiet beginning of the period, Madison Walker changed that after she tripped up Jean-Marie Padden at 6:03. The Lakers went on their third power play of the night but were unsuccessful for the third time.

Teggart, with her third penalty of the game, was called for holding. The Lakers went on their fifth penalty kill of the game.

19 seconds into the Cardinals’ power play, Sheeran gave Plattsburgh State a 2-1 lead at 12:47 of the third period. Kiraly and Bate Flanagan were credited with the assists.

With just under a minute to goal, the Lakers pulled Madrigal to get a man-advantage, which was successful. Blake, with 16.8 seconds remaining, scored the game-tying goal with assists from Kate Randazzo and Ellis.

The game entered a 5-minute sudden-death overtime period. All 246 fans in attendance were experiencing a possible upset opportunity.

Plattsburgh State dominated the offense in the overtime period but was not able to get anything past Madrigal during the five minutes, who made some top-quality saves off of the post.

With 1:37 remaining, Kayla Meneghin was called for tripping, putting the Lakers on their fourth power play of the night. The man-advantage would stay the rest of the period.

Wolejko remained perfect in the overtime period, as well, stopping all the shots. The overtime game would end in a tie.

The Oswego State Lakers play next on Feb. 9 against SUNY Cortland for a weekend matchup at Cortland. They return on Feb. 10 to play the Red Dragons at the Marano Campus Center Ice Arena. The Plattsburgh State Cardinals go to SUNY Potsdam on Feb. 10 but return to Plattsburgh to face the Bears on home ice on Feb. 11.
