Laker Game Day Preview: Men’s hockey at Morrisville

Last Time Out

Last night the No. 4/5 Oswego State Lakers knocked off the Morrisville State Mustangs with a 4-0 shutout at the IcePlex led by two goals from senior David Ferreira. The Lakers moved to 13-3-2 with the win and reclaimed first place in the SUNYAC with an 8-0-1 record and 17 points while the Mustangs fell to 6-11-3 overall and 3-8-0 in conference play. In addition to Ferreira, Michael Gillespie and and Mitch Emerson also scored for Oswego State. David Richer finished with 17 saves and his first collegiate shutout while Jared Young compiled 40 saves on 44 shots.

Herlihey Watch

Oswego State senior captain Mitch Herlihey assisted on Gillespie’s goal last night to give himself 93 total points on the season, seven away from the 100-point milestone. Herlihey will need to average one point per game for the remainder of the regular season to reach 100.

SUNYAC Scope

With an 8-0-1 record, the Oswego State Lakers control their own destiny in the conference. As things currently stand, if the Lakers can win out they will win the conference. No other team can reach their total if they acquire every possible point available moving forward. As other teams who were expected to compete for the top spot in the conference keep taking each other out, games like these are extremely valuable to Oswego State so they can maintain their control on home ice throughout the SUNYAC playoffs.

Players to Watch

OSW- Josh Zizek

The sophomore center had a hot start to the season with an unexpected scoring ability and a shifty offensive game, but has cooled off considerably in recent games. Tonight offers a great opportunity for Zizek to get back on the scoresheet and get back on a tear for the final stretch of the season.

MOR- Jared Young

Young put together 40 saves last night, which is impressive for any goaltender. If the Mustangs offense is able to surprise the Lakers tonight and get on the board, the sophomore goaltender has the capability to steal a game.

Prediction

We saw these same two teams on the same ice during last night’s contest, but tonight should be a very different looking game. The Lakers won and nearly outshot the Mustangs by 30, but four goals is likely a much closer game than anybody in the Oswego State locker room was looking for against a team so low in the standings. Legs might be an issue for the Lakers as the game progresses, but tonight’s outcome should not be in doubt. Gosek and his staff will have the team ready to go against a tough goaltender in Young and they should be able to put up a higher total than they reached last night.

Oswego State wins 7-2.
