Lakers Gameday Preview: Women’s hockey vs. Williams College
Last Time Out
The Oswego State Lakers and Williams College Ephs played against each other on Nov. 25, resulting in a shutout victory for the Ephs. Abby Brustad had a hat-trick in the 5-0 victory on Saturday.
Mariah Madrigal missed her second straight game of the season, with Amber Samonek replacing her. She let up four goals in the first period, all within ten minutes of each other. She let up the fifth goal in the final period, at 9:52 to give Brustad her third goal of the game. Jordan Emerson and Jean-Marie Padden both led the Lakers with four shots on goal.
Looking at the Ephs
Now with momentum after their first win of the season, Williams College will look to be .500 on the season after the game today. Brustad, along with Alex Lovaas and Annie Rush, leads the team with three points. Lovaas had two goals in the game on Saturday, and Rush added two assists.
Goaltender Christina Cleroux made 28 saves in net to preserve her shutout. She allowed two goals in her first game against Hamilton College earlier in the season.
The Ephs next play on Dec. 1 and Dec. 2 against Wesleyan College in Connecticut. The team will be looking to grab another win before they go to Connecticut.
History vs. Williams College
The Lakers now have a 3-1-1 record against the Ephs, after the loss on Saturday. This was the first time in history that Williams College has shutout the Lakers. This was also Samonek’s first time against the Ephs, and now knows what to expect for the game today.
Player Spotlight
OSW: Jordan Emerson
While Jordan Emerson has not been able to put her name on the stat sheet for goals and assists, she has been a silent but effective player on the ice on the blueline as a defenseman. She has 15 shots on goal for the season, in her first year as a Laker. While she has made some mistakes as a freshman, those have not seemed to affect her throughout the early season.
WIL: Abby Brustad
Abby Brustad was a force to be reckoned with against the Lakers on Nov. 25. Scoring a hat-trick is a great feat for any hockey player. The junior had only four in both her freshman and sophomore seasons. She will be a player to watch as the Lakers try to come back after the loss, in order to split the weekend.

Prediction
The Lakers did not start well yesterday, letting up four goals. To have any chance in a game, a team cannot let up that many goals in a single period, without scoring any in return. After the shutout, the Lakers might put in Mikaela Ditonto to give the goaltender her first start of the season. They will also have to find a way to break Cleroux, even though the Lakers put 28 shots on goal.
Brustad and Lovaas will have to be heavily watched after scoring three and two goals, respectively. More time will have to be spent in the offensive zone as well, for Oswego State to have a true chance at a 4-5 record.
Their goals per game number is slowly going down, now at 1.7 after the shutouts against Williams College, and Plattsburgh State, along with the low-scoring loss against Buffalo State.
Lakers lose 4-0.
