The Oswego State Lakers won against the Buffalo State Bengals on Nov. 17 by a score of 4-3. The Lakers are now 3-1-0 overall, with a 2-0-0 SUNYAC record.
The Lakers proved dominance early in the game, peppering shots on goaltender Ian Sylves, who made 10 saves in the first period. Despite the saves, sophomore Joseph Molinaro did score at 5:06 of the first period. After a Cameron Berry faceoff win, Molinaro had a clear shot to the top right corner of the net.
At 7:29, the Bengals answered the Lakers’ goal, with Anthony Passero scoring after David Richer gave up a rebound and lost where the puck was. Sam Maddox was credited with the assist.
At 12:36, the Lakers went on their first power play after Buffalo State was called for a boarding penalty. Ryan Stayner hit Charlie Pelnik in Oswego State’s defensive zone. The Lakers were not able to capitalize, despite one shot on goal and a couple post shots, as well.
Both Richer and Sylves were perfect in the second period, allowing no goals. Richer made fives saves in the period. Sylves had 11.
Tyson Bruce originally scored at 6:15 of the second, on a breakaway. The goal was waived off a minute later after the referees called goaltender interference.
Buffalo State also had a couple of penalties in the third period, with Colin O’Connor getting called for interference at 7:56 and Michael Guerrera got called for tripping Josh Zizek on a breakaway. The Lakers weren’t able to score on either power play.
Carter Allen was called for hooking with 5:11 left in the second period. Richer was able to stop both shots he faced on the penalty kill, and the Lakers returned to full strength after the two penalties.
With 14:22 left in the third period, Thomas Horn was called for a boarding penalty, and the Lakers were able to kill it.
At 8:43 of the final regulation period, Aaron Huffnagle scored the goal of the night for the Lakers, off of a rebound shot from Josh Zizek.
With 3:14 left in regulation, Mac Wood was able to tie the game off after hitting it off of the boards. Richer backed up, and it went in off the bottom of his skate. Guerrera was awarded the assist.
With 1:33 left in the regulation period, Cameron Berry scored the game-winning goal at the top right corner against Sylves. The goal was unassisted. Mitch Emerson secured the game with 58.8 seconds left in the game on an empty net goal. Gillespie had the assist.
With 36.5 seconds, Buffalo State was able to come back within one after a goal from Vadim Vadim Vasjonkin. Conno Zak had the assist.
The Lakers return to action on Nov. 18 against SUNY Fredonia at the Marano Campus Center for another SUNYAC matchup.
