Randazzo overtime magic leads Lakers past Castleton University

A third period collapse from Oswego State led to an overtime period that the Lakers were able to escape from with a 3-2 win thanks to a wrist shot from the top of the circle off the stick of Kate Randazzo.

The Lakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two periods after Emma Morisette and Eryn Stewart goals.

“The first goal, I was just trying to make sure I wasn’t going to stuff it in her pads,” Morisette said. “I had a lot of time so I just had to wait.”

Stewart got on the scoresheet with a power play goal at the 10:57 mark of the second period after sliding a shot that never left the ice past a screened Alexis Kalm for a 2-0.

In the third, Castleton University was able to storm back by taking advantage of undisciplined Oswego State play that led to consecutive 5-on-3 chances.

“Undisciplined is the best word for it,” head coach Diane Dillon said. “We did alright. We haven’t spent much time in that situation, but that’s a situation you hope to avoid. That’s when your goaltender needs to be your best player.”

The Lakers goaltender, Mariah Madrigal, stopped 14 of 16 shots to get the win tonight.

Nicolle Trivino of Castleton University was able to backhand a shot past Madrigal’s blocker into the top corner of the net with 0.9 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

“I thought she played well,” Dillon said. “She’s very determined, a very methodical goaltender.”

In the overtime period, sustained Lakers offensive pressure following a timeout led to Randazzo having time in the slot to wrist a shot past Kalm for the winner.

After a 2-0 opening weekend on home-ice, the Lakers will return to action next Saturday against Elmira College for Pink The Rink Night in Marano Campus Center Ice Arena.
