Lakers Game Day Preview: Women’s hockey vs Castleton University

Last Time Out

The Oswego State Lakers women’s hockey team went against New England College on Oct. 27. The team proved their dominance in the victory, with a 5-0 win, racking up 58 shots in the game. Monica Cramer came away with two goals, and Kate Randazzo had three assists. The power play was key for the team, going 4-7 on the night.

Castleton University also had a dominating victory against Becker College on Oct. 27, defeating them 7-2. Senior Lisa Kilroy had two goals in the victory. Castleton wasn’t afraid to put on the shots, either, throwing 40 shots on net. Their power play went 2-9 on the night, and goaltender Rylie Willis faced 13 shots, saving 11.

Lakers vs. Castleton History

This will be the twelfth time that the Lakers will play the Spartans in the history of Oswego State women’s hockey. Most recently, the two squared off at Castleton, and the Lakers won 4-3. Senior Olivia Ellis came away with a goal and three assists last year, and Mariah Madrigal had 17 saves in net.

The last time the Lakers hosted Castleton was in 2015, where Oswego State lost 2-3. The Lakers are 7-3-0 against the Spartans all-time, including the Castleton State Tournament that Oswego State attended in 2010.

Looking at Castleton

Castleton will most likely be looking to continue their dominance, after the 7-2 victory over Becker College. Their leading scorer from last year, Aimee Briand returns after a 19-point season last year, with eight goals and 11 assists. She had a goal and an assist in the victory on Friday.

While Willis didn’t get the starting nod a majority of the time last year, she still performed well with a .912 save percentage. The junior had a .846 save percentage last night. It’ll be between her, or sophomore Alexis Kalm who will get the nod tonight.

More than Hockey

As the Lakers take on Castleton, there will be more than just a hockey game that is being honored. It’s the third annual TEAL night, that raises awareness for ovarian cancer. Both the men’s and women’s teams will be sporting teal jerseys and remembering Mary Gosek, who was a great member of the Laker hockey family. Her widower, Ed, is the men’s hockey head coach.

The Lakers have a 1-1 record on TEAL night. Two years ago, they beat Neumann University 2-0, and last year they lost to SUNY Potsdam 1-2.

Prediction

Castleton will be trying to gain back some ground on the series record between these two teams. Before the 4-3 victory for the Lakers last season, the Spartans won back-to-back, gaining some ground on Oswego State.

Castleton is also bringing in a new coach, Ashley Salerno, who has plenty of experience coming into this position. It’ll always be a wonder what systems a new coach is bringing in until the puck is dropped.

As long as the Lakers can maintain both discipline in avoiding penalties, and capitalizing on the power play, it could be another good game for the Lakers. It might not be as high of scoring for either team, compared to the Lakers’ 5-0 victory over New England College, or the Spartans’ 7-2 victory over Becker College, but the game will still feature some key moments.

Lakers win 4-3.
