Laker Gameday Preview: Women’s Hockey vs. New England Colleg

Last Time Out

The Oswego State Lakers were last on the ice on Oct. 21 in an exhibition game against the Toronto Midget Aeros. In an overtime thriller, the Lakers lost 4-3 less than a minute into the overtime period. Jean-Marie Padden came away with her first goal in her Laker career.

The Lakers will look to bounce back after the loss against New England College, who is also playing their first regular season game.

Lakers vs. Pilgrims History

The Lakers have faced the New England College Pilgrims five times in their history. The Lakers have the upper hand, going 4-0-1 against the Pilgrims. Last season, the Lakers scored four goals in the third period, to win 6-2. Captain Olivia Ellis had an assist in the game, and sophomore Julieann White came away with a goal.

This is the third time the Lakers will be hosting the Pilgrims at the Marano Campus Center Ice Arena, splitting the series with the Pilgrims. The last time these two faced each other in Oswego, the Lakers blanked the Pilgrims 5-0. Mariah Madrigal, now a senior, had a 16-save shutout.

Looking at the Pilgrims

Since the 2009-2010 season, the Pilgrims have been led by former head coach Sis Paulsen. But this year, they are under new leadership, with head coach Maria Lewis and graduate assistant Kevin Salinas.

The team only returns one senior, Kayla Donahue, who has one point in her career. She played eight games her junior season. Junior Alexa Scribner led all non-seniors last year as a sophomore and is the returning scoring leader. Junior goaltender Ashley Castriotta, who took fifteen of their starts last year, is also returning.

Prediction

Given the record of the Lakers and Pilgrims and their history statistics against each other, it’s not hard to predict that the Oswego State Lakers will win this game. Head coach Diane Dillon has a strong record against New England College.

However, the Pilgrims, with their new head coach, might be bringing in some new systems. But, with a lack of seniors for morale, after losing such a large senior class, it might be hard to gain any momentum early.

The Lakers’ defense has done a great job on both stopping shots, as well as the penalty kill. As long as the Lakers can continue these trends, it’ll be on the offense to continue their dominate offense against New England College.

Lakers win 5-0.
