Individual performances yet to lead to consistent wins for women’s lacrosse

In the first six games of the season, certain members of the Oswego State women’s lacrosse team have compiled impressive individual accolades, which have yet to translate to total team success.

Through six games, the team has amassed a 2-4 record, a letdown in comparison to last year’s mark of 5-1 through their first six contests.

In March, sophomore Teresa Shattuck broke the Oswego State women’s lacrosse single-game assist record with a total of nine against Sage College at Laker Turf Stadium during a 17-2 win.

Just 11 days later, she broke her own record with 10 assists in a road game against SUNY Canton during a 17-6 win.

“It comes down to everyone getting their cuts, I just get them the ball.” Shattuck said.

First-year head coach Britt Howard praised Shattuck for her ability to be a leader for the other players on the team.

“She’s stepped up a lot,” Howard said. “Girls look toward her for play calling and she’s a leader on the field.”

Shattuck’s historic performances have come in the team’s only two wins all season, with the Lakers offense sputtering in their other four contests.

Outside of their two 17 goal outbursts, the team’s put up six, five, four, and three goals in their other games. It is not for a lack of effort, as the team faced difficult opponents such as an RIT team with a 5-2 record and a Clarkson University squad who only has one loss in their eight games.

“As a team we’ve done well connecting the dots,” Howard said. “We’ve been having good practices and getting better every day.”

Shattuck is not the only member of the team who is having a great season on the stat sheet.

Gemma O’Kane leads the team with 11 goals and five players have five or more goals. Starting goalie Angela Ponto has given the team a chance to win every game.

Ponto, a junior from Syracuse, has played in all six games this season, and has better overall stats than her counterparts as a total.

Her goals against average of 8.48 is better than her opponents average of 8.67, her .541 save percentage towers over the opponents average of .485, and the 50 goals she has allowed is less than the 52 scored on her opponents.

“It sucks I get the stats, everyone else works hard,” Ponto said. “I’m the one making the saves, but it’s an effort as a defensive unit.”

Other than the 14 goals scored by RIT, Ponto and the Lakers defense have held their opponents to a moderate total in every game this season.

“I watch a lot of film on the other teams we play,” Howard said. “I try to prepare our offense for the other team’s defense and prepare our defense for the other team’s offense.”

Oswego State’s disappointing results has not been for a lack of effort having, near even statistics to their opponents combined totals on the season.

With SUNYAC play starting on Saturday, the Lakers have a chance to regain their success they found last season and continue the steps that the program has taken over the last few seasons.
