Women’s Hockey Defeated SUNY Canton in Second Game of Weekend Series

The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team set the bar even higher, proving that this group is one of the teams to beat in the ECAC Women’s West with its second win over SUNY Canton. The game finished off the weekend series with a score of 6-1. The Lakers advance with a new season record of 11-1-0, while Canton falls back with its new record of 5-4-0.

SUNY Canton came back into the game strong, but not strong enough to take on the Lakers. Freshman Amber Samonek started in the goal for the Lakers and proved to be a key component in the Laker’s success throughout the game. Samonek had a rather uneventful game with only facing 12 SUNY Canton shots on goal.

In the net for SUNY Canton was freshman Brooke Susac, who faced 40 Laker shots on goal and allowed six goals.
Finding the back of the Kangaroos net was not an issue for Oswego State in tonight’s matchup. The first goal was scored at the 9:17 mark by senior Alexa Aramburu. This goal was her 10th on the season, giving her the lead in total goals for the Lakers.

“I feel great but I’d have to give credit to my linemates,” Aramburu said. “They work extremely hard and they give me a lot of the opportunities that I get.”

Senior Kendall Appelbaum had the second goal at 16:37 of the first period with an assist by junior Olivia Ellis. Not only did this put the Lakers up by two, but Ellis furthered her lead in program history for points. She now has 71 as a junior and should continue to build upon that.

“Hopefully they keep coming and I get more,” said Ellis. “I’m really grateful for my linemates and them being there and putting the puck in the net when I pass it to them.”

Andrea Noss kicked off the second period with a power play goal on the 6:27 mark, assisted by Olivia Ellis.
Shortly after senior Alyssa Brockman scored yet another goal for the Lakers on the 7:53 mark, this being her first on the season. Her goal was unassisted.

The Lakers and Kangaroos continued to battle it out on the ice for the remainder of the period.

Freshman Jacquelin White finished off the period for the Lakers scoring the third and final goal of the period at the 14:27 mark. The goal was assisted by Alexa Aramburu.

Going into the third period, the Lakers had a quick start with a goal on the 2:20 mark made by Olivia Ellis. Ellis was assisted by Jacquelin White and Alexa Aramburu.

“I think my line in general is really starting to get chemistry and move the puck well together,” Ellis said.

The Kangaroos, were quick to respond with a goal scored by Kaylah Menchaca on the 5:18 mark. The goal put the Kangaroos on the board for the first time this weekend after she broke in alone shorthanded.

Although the Lakers came out shining, Diane Dillon warned that opponents should never be underestimated. According to Dillon, a team always has a strong chance of coming back stronger in the second game of a weekend series.
