Quick Recap: Men’s Ice Hockey vs Morrisville State

Oswego State moved to 9-0-0 on the season with an easy 8-1 win over the Morrisville State Mustangs. A four-line effort and goals from eight different goal scorers paved the way for the Lakers to complete the weekend sweep of the Mustangs.

Despite another sluggish start, the Lakers gained some traction at the end of the first, and it rolled over into the second period as the Lakers scored four times to pull away from Morrisville State.

Matt Galati opened the scoring with 11:54 left in the first and saw the teddy bears rain down. Mitchell Herlihey found Galati breaking in the zone and the senior forward was able to gain some space to beat Mustangs’ goaltender CJ Sharp over the left shoulder to put the Lakers up 1-0.

Just like yesterday’s game, the Mustangs were able to tie the game at one apiece on the power play. CJ Stubbs scored his fifth of the season with an assist from Jordan Carvalho at 15:42 of the first.

Josh Zizek then answered just over a minute later to put the Lakers up 2-1. Joey Davies was credited with the assist on the goal in close from Zizek, his first of the season.

Oswego State led 20-4 in shots after the first period of play. CJ Sharp was busy in the first, making 18 saves on the 20 shots he faced.

Oswego State poured it on in the second, scoring four goals to extend its lead to 6-1 after 40 minutes. These four goals pushed the Lakers’ second period total on the season to 15.

Andrew Barton scored just 1:13 into the second period to make it 3-1 Oswego State. His goal came off a wrist shot from the far side circle and was unassisted.

Kenny Neil scored his seventh of the season to further extend Oswego State’s lead to three at the 5:04 mark. He scored on a rebound after scrum broke out in front. Sharp got hit in the helmet with a shot and then left the game following this play but remained on the bench. Sal Stalteri relieved Sharp after this goal.

Shawn Hulshof then made it 5-1 with an assist to Alex Botten. The puck went through the slot and Herlihey whiffed on a shot, but Hulshof was there on the far side to beat Stalteri at 12:42 of the middle frame.

Herlihey made it 6-1 and capped off the scoring in the second on a wraparound chance. This goal chased Stalteri from the game and Jared Young entered. Herlihey’s third of the year came at the 13:13 mark, and Barton and Galati tallied assists on the insurance marker.

Morrisville State was able to get more shots on net in the second period (9), but still trailed Oswego State’s 11 shots in the middle frame. Shots were officially 31-13 going into the third period.

Oswego State would add another goal to its already enormous five-goal lead in the third. Joey Rutkowski’s point shot got through traffic with Zizek screening Young. Joey Davies would then find the puck in the slot and beat Young at the 14:10 mark for his second of the season.

Stephen Johnson scored within the final might with an assist from Shawn Hulshof to push the Laker lead to seven. Johnson’s fourth goal of the season was the 12th goal of the weekend from Oswego State.
