Democratic challenger Colleen Deacon lost the election for the 24th district Congressional seat to incumbent Republican Rep. John Katko.

In her speech, Deacon said her campaign was all about “making an America that works for everyone. She thanked her son Adrian for his support during her campaign.

“Thirteen months ago now I was sitting at home with my son discussing whether or not I wanted to get into this race. He told me I had an opportunity to make a difference and that if I didn’t take this opportunity, I would regret it everyday for the rest of my life.”

Deacon supporter Joseph Chiarenza, the Town of Dewitt supervisor, said the loss was a “tough blow” but said Deacon is a “hard worker”

“Hopefully John Katko is going to do us right in his next term,” Chiarenza said.

With Deacon down in the polls, Malfitano said Deacon is “doing a great job. The campaign got a little nasty toward the end, but she was aggressive when she needed to be.”

Colleen Deacon supporters are in high spirits, enjoying refreshments and chatting with one another as they await the results of the 24th District Congressional election at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown.
Polls in New York State closed about an hour ago.
The crowd erupted in cheers when it was announced that Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton won New York State.
Deacon supported Nathan Anderson said he supports Deacon because “She always stood up for me. I want to stand up for her.”
Syracuse University students Edward Nwaba and Ashleigh Bobbitt both worked on Deacon’s finance team. Nwaba described Deacon as “passionate about what she does” and “nice to talk to.”
Bobbitt was attracted to the “hands-on experience” Deacon has, rather than simply “degree knowledge.”
