Forwards:
Sustained offensive pressure early in the game established a consistent force throughout the game, especially on power play.
Best offensive chance of the night came on the power play when Shawn Hulshof lasered one from the right circle past Geneseo’s Devin McDonald.
Top power play line of Shawn Hulshof, Alex Botten, and Kenny Neil scored twice while a man up tonight, with Hulshof and Neil getting the tallies.
Three of the night’s five goals were scored by the first line, with each linemate having one of their own.
“A lot of it (coming back) had to do with us moving our feet and not being tentative.” Coach Gosek said “For whatever reason we were just stumbling through the first two periods.”
Sean Federow will be out for a sustained period due to an undisclosed injury.
Senior forward Alex Botten, with his empty-net goal, logged his 98th point in a Laker uniform.
Defense:
Defensive pairings were being switched up all night by assistant coach Mark Digby, with changes such as Stephen Johnson and Charlie Pelnik playing together for many minutes tonight.
The defense collectively stayed strong in front of Zawakdzi, only giving up 15 shots in the first two periods.
Sophomore Joey Rutkowski was an integral part of Oswego’s third goal to tie the game. He got involved deep in the zone to keep the play alive.
The involvement in the offensive effort was a key on every power play throughout the night, leading to two power play goals.
Stephen Johnson scored with 40.8 seconds left in the game to give the Lakers a 4-3 lead and the comeback win. He stepped into the slot to bury a McDonald rebound.
The defense cut down on their penalties heavily tonight, compared to earlier games this season. Only one penalty came against the Oswego defense tonight with a Charlie Pelnik interference call at 4:36 in the 2nd.
Goalies:
Zawadzki tracked puck well on long range shots and controlled rebounds well all night.
Poor puck handling at times in the first period from Zawadzki, especially during the powerplay when he elected to throw the puck behind the net rather than up the far side of the ice which was wide open.
Weak goal in the first given up to Arthur Gordon on a centering pass from Andrew Romano that snuck in between his legs and was easily tapped in.
Consistently made huge saves throughout the game to prevent Geneseo from picking up any sustained momentum, especially a third period glove snare on Geneseo’s Sotiri Athanasopoulos, who tallied a goal earlier in the evening.
“You just got to stay in there and get a couple key saves,” The senior goaltender said “it all turned out well for us.
