The Oswego State Women’s Hockey team had a dominant win over the Chatham Cougars today 6-0. The Lakers dominated the game from the outset playing a fast and aggressive game from start to finish. The Lakers possessed the puck for most of the game and generated a lot of great offensive chances.

They dominated all aspects of the game other than just offense and this is something Assistant Captain Olivia Ellis really liked about their game today.

“Even though the scoreboard said 6-0 as a team I think we played really well. We executed are fore-check really wand did all the little things right.”

Oswego State was 3/5 on the power play and moved the puck beautifully during it. Oswego State did all the little things right on their dominant power play. They screened the goalie by getting bodies in front. They were not afraid to shoot and overpass. They cycled well. All the little things you look for the Lakers executed to perfection. The great power play that this team has comes down to a couple of contributing factors according to Head Coach of the Oswego State Lakers team Diane Dillon.

“It’s early in the season so we are getting a lot of opportunities. Usually early in the season the refs call a couple of excessive penalties so we’ve gotten a lot of practice on it, but at the same time we have a lot of veterans on the power play units that have been doing this for a long time, and they get it. They understand the nuances where the opportunities are and their hard work really paid off.”

The Lakers could have easily scored more than the 6 goals they did today. The offense this season has been clicking, scoring nearly 5 goals a game and generating a lot offensive chances. Assistant Captain Olivia Ellis says there is a lot of factors that go into this early season offensive surge.

“I think cycling down low we’re really communicating, to working on systems in practice, working on give and go’s in front of the net, so I think if we keep doing that and work hard we will keep doing well.” With this victory the Lakers improved to (4-0-0) on the season which something that head coach Diane Dillon is not taking lightly.

“It’s fantastic having such a great start to the season. These kids worked really hard over the summer and we felt a little snakebitten after last year finishing the way we did. We ended up winning our first playoff game which was nice, but we underachieved and our mantra coming into the summer this year was we’re better than this and our team came into camp in great shape this year which makes all the difference in the world because now we can work on systems in different aspects of the game instead of conditioning all the time.”

All the conditioning seems to have paid off as the team looks dominant this year and motivated and who knows this year. Now only time will tell if they are for real.
