Laker Gameday Preview: Women’s Ice Hockey Vs Chatham University
Last Meeting
The women’s ice hockey team will kick off Homecoming Weekend taking on the Chatham Cougars tonight at 7 p.m. The last time the team faced off, the Cougars and Lakers tied 0-0 in overtime.
Team History
The Lakers finished off last season with an overall record of 12-11. After finishing with a .519, the Lakers have decided to kick it up this year in preparation for a strong, winning, season. According to assistant coach Greg Haney, the newly added freshman class is working very well with the seasoned veterans, which could lead to success against teams like the Cougars. Last season, the Cougars finished with a disappointing overall record of 8-15. After losing one of their top scoring senior forwards, Katrina Hawkins, it will be interesting as to how they’re going to do this season.
Players to Watch
Lakers- White twins
Everyone’s eyes have been on the White twins, Julieann and Jacquelin. After starting off the season strong, the chances of them getting a lot ice time is very high. With a combined four goals on the season, the twins show strong communication skills on the ice along with adequate stick handling skills. The twins might just be rookies, but they’re beginning to play like veterans.
Cougars- Erika Martin
Martin will be getting a great deal of playing time tonight. Last season Martin played in 24, games scoring a total of six goals. Although she has huge shoes to fill when it comes to graduated seniors, Martin will definitely be someone to look out for on the ice.
Game Prediction
Both teams are going to be going at each other at full strength to make up for the 0-0 OT tie in their last match up. The Cougars are also coming off of another tie from their second game of the season against the Hockey Training Institute Stars. I can see the usual veteran players, Laura Thacker, Kendall Appelbaum, Andrea Noss and Brennan Butler getting crucial minutes tonight. Recently they’ve shown that once they get their momentum going on the ice, there’s no stopping them. It could really go either way but with how the Lakers have been playing so far this season, the chances of a win are escalated.
