Offense
The Lakers had seven different goal scorer’s tonight on each of their goals with scoring coming from up and down the lineup.
Kenny Neil, Alex Botten, Jody Sullivan, Aaron Huffnagle, Andrew Barton, Matt Galati and David Ferreira all found their way into the goal column.
“I think it’s a sign of the unselfishness,” head coach Ed Gosek said. “There was a lot of shots guys could’ve taken but passed up to a linemate or a teammate.”
The Lakers had two goals called back, one for goaltender interference and the other for a kicking motion.
The power play broke through in a big way tonight with three goals coming off six chances.
Defense
Joey Rutkowski continued to build on his strong performance in last weekend’s exhibition game with a combination of physical play and blocked shots.
The defensive unit played with much more discipline than last game, cutting down on their penalties and being more poised in their own zone.
Senior Chris Raguseo had the primary assist on Aaron Huffnagle’s first career goal in the second period to extend the Lakers lead to 4-0.
The penalty kill went 7-7 tonight, staying perfect so far on the season.
Goalies
Matt Zawadzki allowed one goal on 17 shots tonight due to an opportunity taken from a stick handling error.
Zawadzki came through multiple times on every Lakers penalty kill, especially on a brilliant glove save on Elmira forward Nick Ford in the second period.
“Your goalie needs to be your best penalty killer,” Gosek said. “When they did get pucks through I thought he tracked the puck well and was aggressive.”
