A little bit of a slow start to this one for both teams, but the Lakers turned it on in the second half of the first period and were able to find the back of the net twice to lead 2-0 after 20 minutes.
First, Kenny Neil made a great play to chip the puck to himself in his own end on the penalty kill that resulted in the Lakers’ first goal of the night. Botten received the pass from Neil in the neutral zone and went in 2-on-1. Neil got the pass back from Botten on the backdoor and Sal Magliocco had no chance to get himself in front of it.
Oswego State then made it 2-0 at the 13:59 mark, exactly two minutes after their first goal. This one was another Magliocco had no chance to stop as Hulshof found Neil near the Laker bench and Oswego State had another odd-man rush. Alex Botten was able to roof the cross-ice pass to pad the Lakers’ lead.
The Lakers had their third goal of the period overturned. Joey Davies was called for being in the blue paint on Hulshof’s hard shot from the high slot.
The Lakers led 14-6 on the shot chart after 20 minutes.
Oswego State was able to bury two more goals in the second. The Lakers put up 10 shots and allowed six, even after taking three more penalties for a two-period total of five.
The first came from Jody Sullivan at the 1:55 mark of the period. He didn’t get all of the shot, but the puck still managed to trickle by Magliocco to go up by three.
Aaron Huffnagle showed his skill set for the second Laker goal of the period. He was able to beat his man, Jonathan Grassie, as he cut to the middle then fired one past Magliocco top shelf to give the Lakers a commanding 4-0 lead.
The Laker power play finally came through on their fourth chance of the night. Matt Galati was able to bury his one-timed chance from the top of the circle at the 3:16 mark. Stephen Johnson and Shawn Hulshof were credited with the assists.
The sixth Laker goal of the night came off the stick of David Ferreira. He put home a juicy rebound after Sean Federow drove wide and threw one on net. Chris Raguseo was credited with the secondary assist at 8:41 of the final period.
Elmira finally got on the board at the 18:05 mark of the third. Tyler Theodoulou pressured Zawadzki behind the net. He then found Matthew Cuce who had almost the entire net to shoot at to make it 6-1.
However,The Lakers would not sit on their lead. Andrew Barton made it 7-1 on the power play shortly after Elmira’s first goal. Barton’s unassisted marker was the Lakers second goal on the man advantage tonight.
The Lakers will square off with Elmira tomorrow night on the road. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
