Laker Gameday Preview: Women’s Ice Hockey @ New England College Pilgrims
The Oswego State women’s hockey team is hitting the road today and taking on the New England College Pilgrims for their first regular season game. This is also New England College’s first game of the season.
Last Meeting
Last season these two teams played each other and Oswego State came up victorious with a resounding 5-0 win. Although this is a non-conference game, this is a big game for both teams as starting off the season on the right foot is definitely on the agenda for both squads. The Lakers looked impressive in their exhibition game against the Toronto Midget Aeros and look to rebound from a 12-11-4 record from the season prior.
Goalie Matchup
The Lakers will go with their new starting goalie this year, junior Mariah Madrigal. Madrigal is taking the reins from long time starting goalie Tori Trovato who graduated this past spring. Madrigal was 4-3-1 last year playing in nine games and starting in eight. New England College is also looking to make a big improvement from their 8-17-1 record last season. Starting in net for the Pilgrims should be sophomore Ashley Castriotta. She looks to start her season off right against the Lakers as she is taking over the starting goalie position this year for her team as well. Castriotta played in seven games last season and posted a 2-3-0 record.
Players to Watch
Lakers- Olivia Ellis
Ellis is looking to continue from last years’ campaign where she led the team with 7 goals, 14 assists and 21 points. Ellis, an alternate captain this year, looked great in the exhibition matchup. She created turnovers and caused chaos in the offensive zone with her line’s forecheck.
Pilgrims- Mackenzie Meegen
Meegen looks to make her first game as captain a good one and continue her solid season with five goals and six assists.
Game Prediction
The Lakers will start slow and give up the first goal then rattle off four straight unanswered and have a dominate victory with newcomers looking to blend in with upperclassmen.
Lakers win 4-1
