Forwards:
Freshman forward Josh Zizek netted the first goal of the game and his first goal as a Laker. Zizek scored top shelf to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead at 8:59 in the 2nd period.
“It’s huge for confidence, get the monkey off the back in the first game,” the former Nepean Raider Josh Zizek said. “Going into the next weekends, and so on, and so on, it’s definitely a huge weight off the back. You’re not too worried about scoring. You’re just worried about playing.”
Senior forward Trent Durocher netted the second goal of the game for the Lakers on a great 2-on-1 pass from Joey Davies.
Joey Davies and Kenny Neil were instrumental on the kill tonight. The duo blocked shots on almost all of the Lakers’ eight penalty kills.
Alex Botten iced the game for the Lakers with an empty-net goal with 10.3 seconds left.
Defense:
Senior defenseman and captain Chris Raguseo recorded three penalties tonight and was on for the CCHL All-Graduate team’s lone goal tonight.
“We know he’s better than that,” Coach Gosek said. “It’s not for a lack of effort, it’s just trying to do too much.”
Raguseo and Kristoffer Brun we’re on for the only goal allowed.
The defensive corps as a whole gave an outstanding effort tonight and were huge parts on the penalty kill.
Goalies:
Senior Goalie Matt Zawadkzi looked great in his one period of play. As a senior, he looks to assume the starting role for the Lakers for the beginning of the season.
With 2:52 remaining in the first, he made his biggest save of the evening on CCHL forward Andrew Dodson with a full out sprawl across the net to keep the game scoreless.
In the second period, Arizona State transfer David Jacobson entered the game in his first action as a Laker. He recorded sixteen stops in the second frame to keep up Zawadzki’s shut out.
With 1:13 remaining, he recorded a glove save that trickled over his catcher on top to the top of the net, to thwart the CCHL All-Graduates biggest scoring chance of the second frame.
“One of my favorite games I played in in a while,” Jacobson said. “It was really fun. There was a great group of guys in front of me.”
Freshman goalie Cedric Hansen entered the game for the start of the third period, looking to continue the Lakers outstanding goaltending for the evening.
He allowed the CCHL All-Graduates only goal of the evening on a shot that trickled over his glove, but he was commended by head coach Ed Gosek on how he bounced back.
“I know Cedric would like to have the one back that went in,” said the fourteen year head coach. “But he gathered himself up, got his focus back, I thought that was a big plus as a young kid.”
The Lakers goaltenders were also the biggest penalty killers of the night, being the backbone of a penalty kill that was successful 8 times out of 8 tries.
