Laker Gameday Preview: Women’s Soccer vs SUNY Cortland

Oswego State women’s soccer will host SUNY Cortland at Laker Soccer Field today at 1 p.m. High winds and rain is the game time forecast as the Lakers seek to earn the right to contend for a spot in the SUNYAC playoffs.

The Red Dragons, along with the College at Brockport, have a one-point advantage in the standings over the Lakers heading into their final conference matches. Controlling their own destiny, this is a must win match for the girls. Assuming Brockport wins against SUNY Potsdam, who have had a poor conference record  of 2-5-1, the Lakers cannot afford their third in conference tie.

“Our defensive approach is the same as always, coach Brian McGrane said. “We’ve got a few players we’re focused on, but it’s no different than a game like Geneseo or Buffalo State.”

Defense has been a strength for Oswego State this fall as they rank fourth among SUNYAC schools in goals against (16). Cortland who also has only let up 16 goals this season proves a tough matchup for the Lakers attack as well.

After coming off a four game winless streak the Lakers are now (2-0-1) in the last three matches, the one tie coming against the current number two seed Geneseo. In these three matches the Lakers offense has picked up as they have outscored their opponents 5-3.

The Lakers will go out with their usually 4-5-1 formation with an attacking central midfielders ahead of the two holding midfielders.

The focal point of Oswego State’s scouting report is Amanda Profera. The sophomore striker leads the Red Dragons in goals (5) and total points (14). She is also known to have the clutch gene, recording two game-winning goals this season. Laker center backs Mary Morrison and Chloe Lonergan look to lock down the dangerous righty come game time.

Make it or break is the motto heading into today’s match as the Lakers look to beat the Red Dragons for the third season in a row and earn a chance at the SUNYAC championship.
