Oswego State student stabbed four times outside Shineman Center Sunday morning

On Oct. 16, an NY-Alert was sent out announcing that a fight had taken place on Washington Blvd. near the Shineman Center earlier that morning.

According to this alert, after responding to a call to the County 911 Center, University Police officers found a freshman male who had been stabbed four times in the shoulder. The victim, age 18, was taken to Upstate Medical University Hospital.

In a campus-wide email from Oswego State President Deborah Stanley, students were informed that the victim is in “stable condition” and that his injuries are not life-threatening.

“Witnesses state four males all wearing dark clothing with hoodies pulled over their heads, exited a dark colored 4-door Honda before assaulting the victim,” the alert read. “The car, driven by a female, was last seen heading east on Washington Blvd towards the City of Oswego.” Stanley’s email added that the assailants “have very likely left the area.”

According to Stanley’s email, University Police Chief John Rossi has said he does not believe there is any current danger to the campus.

“Please know, however, that we are committed to the safety of the SUNY Oswego family,” Stanley’s email read. “Our University Police is focused on chasing down leads and, as a measure of heightened safety and security, has called in additional officers to patrol the campus and its perimeters today.”

The assault is believed to have been initiated by an earlier incident at the American Legion on Saturday night. Stanley’s email urged anyone with additional information to contact University Police with details. The email also emphasized the importance of being a supportive campus community as the incident is investigated.

“It is imperative to remember that our campus is home to all of our members from many different backgrounds, and by demonstrating our respect, concern and understanding for each other we live our best lives and help our campus stay safe and strong,” Stanley’s email read.
