Quick Recap: Men’s Hockey vs SUNY Cortland

A good start was needed not just from a hockey standpoint but for momentum. The Lakers will need that more than anything down this final stretch and after the first period they definitely had that going into the second.

Oswego State didn’t score but hit a post and had a number of quality chances that Drew Weigman was able to stop. Casie Garrison took an unsportsmanlike minor at 18:13 after a scrum that ensued from a Sean Federow wrap around chance where we had all day to shoot. The following Laker power play was one of the best all year. Chances from both sides made the Cortland penalty kill work hard.

At the end of the first period the score was knotted at zero but Oswego State led 15-4 on the shot chart.

The second period came and went with three goals.

Brandon Adams scored his first goal of the year as he took a David Ferreira pass to put the puck on a nearly wide open net. Mac Scott was credited with the secondary assist on the first goal.

The final minute of the period brought two goals that were just nine seconds apart. Cortland started to slowly create  some chances and finally were able to break through at the 19:25 mark. They came in on a three-on-two and scored. Michael Mascaro took a shot from the boards that Ignagni originally stopped but the big rebound he let up was put in by Sam Pinsler who was crashing the net.

Just nine seconds later Matt Galati took back the lead. He ripped a shot top corner over the glove of Drew Weigman on an assist from Shawn Hulshof at 19:34 of the second frame. Galati has struggled to score all year so this goal was huge for him and the entire Laker locker room.

The final stanza was good to the Lakers and it was due, in part, to a fast start. Matt Galati scored his second of the game as he poked a loose puck into the net. Shawn Hulshof was credited with his second assist of the game on the Lakers’ third goal that was scored at 1:17 of the third period.

Oswego State wouldn’t bury the empty netter as they had to kill off a late 6-on-4 power play but would still go to win 3-1 over the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons. Galati’s quick answer was all they needed as the Lakers cruised to victory.
