The Oswego State Lakers were outplayed in the first, but not badly. Plattsburgh’s top ranked power play got three chances to work and converted once to give Plattsburgh State the 1-0 lead that stood up for the first 20 minutes of play. Shots were officially 14-2 in favor of the Cardinals.
Melissa Sheeran cut to the middle of the ice through the Laker penalty kill box and buried the feed from Courtney Moriarty. Andrea Ziesmann was credited with the secondary assist on the first marker of the game.
Plattsburgh State exploded for four goals in the middle frame and closed the door on any hope the Lakers had in winning this game.
Melissa Ames opened the scoring at 2:54 of the second period as Trovato fumbled the puck in her glove and lost it into the net. Bad luck play that seemed to really deflate the Lakers. Less than a minute later Plattsburgh State widened the lead as Bridget Balisy and Courtney Moriarty buried a two-on-one chance to make it 3-0 Cardinals.
The third Cardinal goal came at the 9:07 mark of the period as Muna Fadel defelcted a point shot one handed from Megan Delay. Melissa Sheeran was credited with an assist on that play as well. She registered three points in tonight’s game.
The fourth goal came at the 11:28 mark of the period and was the one that ended Tori Trovato’s night. Melissa Sheeran ripped a shot from the hash marks top shelf on Trovato to make it 5-0. The ECAC West Player of the Week, Kayla Meneghin, assisted on the fifth goal of the game as well as Erin Brand.
The third period wasn’t any better to the Lakers on the score board but they did play slightly better offensively. The Lakers still couldn’t score and surrendered two more goals and eventually fell 7-0.
The sixth goal of the night for the Cardinals squeaked through Madrigal. Caitlin Gilligan took a shot from the left side that had just enough on it to beat Madrigal at the 11:07 mark of the third. Muna Fadel and Erin Brand assisted on that marker.
The final goal came as Bridget Balisy recorded yet another point as she got a pass from Gilligan and drove to the net and beat Madrigal short side at 13:18 of the third. A great move and even better finish that the Lakers just couldn’t defend. The same story the entire night.
The Lakers face off with the Cardinals again tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Marano Campus Center Ice Arena.
