Adrian offense explodes, scores 5 against Oswego

The Adrian Bulldogs defeated the Oswego State Lakers 5-1 in the Pathfinder Bank Classic Championship Sunday afternoon to break Oswego’s streak of three consecutive championships for their own home tournament.

The Bulldogs started off extremely fast, something that they didn’t do against Williams yesterday and scored three goals within the first 15 minutes of the game. The sophomore star duo of Kyle Brothers and Mathew Thompson connected for the first goal as Thompson got the cross-ice pass from Brothers and tipped it top-shelf of Laker goalie Adrian Ignagni’s outreached glove. Michael Hoy and Taylor McCloy each added a goal of their own later in the period, taking advantage of incredibly populated and dense creases and sicking the puck past Ignagni.

Matt Zawadzki replaced Ignagni in the net and played very well in the second period. Although he surrendered two goals, neither of which should be blamed on him, he made some remarkable saves that had he Laker faithful cheering.

While the Lakers defense did show some improvements, including killing a 5-3 power play, Trevor Boyd and Brett Pinkerton both found themselves in favorable situations leading to a five-goal lead heading into the final period.

Oswego finally got on the board 8:17 into the game when Chris Waterstreet sent a shot that Kenny Neil deflected for his team-leading eighth foal of the season.

The Lakers have three conference games remaining on their schedule, facing off against Utica College twice and Nazareth College once before hosting No.7 SUNY Geneseo Jan. 22 at Oswego.

The Bulldogs face Aurora and Lake Forest twice before going on the road to No.1 St. Norbert in what should be a potential matchup of two top-five teams in the nation, both conference rivals.
