Highlights of Homecoming Student Spirit Week

Homecoming Student Spirit Week kicked off on Sunday and closes out this weekend after a week of activities sponsored by Campus Life, FANs and the Oswego Alumni Association.  This is the first time homecoming is being celebrated at Oswego State in 40 years.  Here are some highlights of the week’s activities thus far:

Kicking off spirit week was an America’s Got Talent style show- Oswego’s Got Talent.  At Hewitt Ballroom at 7 p.m., students showed off their talents in a high school-esque talent show.  The host, Director of Campus life Earnest Washington, did a fantastic job.  The consistent crowd interaction had people out of their seats and on stage demonstrating the latest dance crazes.

There was everyone from students performing covers, original songs of every genre and campus organizations like the Asian Student Union (ASO) who happened to be awarded the first-runner-up receiving $200.  They performed a unique skit wearing pink tutus acting as dolls who had come to life.

Another highlight was dress like a laker day, while low key, students had a lot to say about what a laker is.

Junior, Brian Messmer says to dress like a laker is to wear “green and gold”.  While three other students said the same.  Freshman, Jessica Kislua says if she had known today was dress like a laker day, she would have worn her Oswego apparel, (green and yellow).  Sophomore, Sara Bernstein says the same, green and yellow would have been her go to.

Though there wasn’t any kind of event students could attend associated with the day, but it raised questions as to what exactly it means to “dress like a laker”.

The Ice Skating Party on Thursday was in the arena with two dollar skate rental for students and free admission.  On the lower level, attendees had the opportunity to skate their hearts out while participating in games that could win them a prize-  a singing contest, random raffle drawing and “free game” to name a few.

On the upper level, Homecoming Student Spirit Week’s sponsor’s Campus Life, FANs and the Oswego Alumni Association each had tables set up with little activities people could participate in.  Each table had decorations having to do with the party’s theme The Wizard of OZ, #ToOzWeGo was the hashtag that was used.  The movie was even playing so everyone could watch while they skated.

The most hyped up event of the week was definitely the Whiteout men’s ice hockey game (check out this week’s Vox Pop for student reactions!) which happened on Friday night.  The Oswego State Lakers lost in overtime to the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals.
