The Oswego State men’s ice hockey team picked up its first victory of the 2015-2016 season in its home opener Saturday night over the College at Brockport Golden Eagles at the Marano Campus Center Arena, 2-0.
Matt Zawadzki played a solid game between the pipes collecting 15 saves on 15 shots en route to his first shutout of the season, bouncing back after allowing three goals on Friday night in Geneseo.
Oswego State got the scoring going at 15:52 of the second period when junior Kenny Neil buried his second goal of the season during a five-minute power play opportunity, assisted by Matt Galati and Shawn Hulshof. The play developed after a near goal for the Golden Eagles who failed to capitalize on a neutral-zone turnover by the Lakers’ defense that left Brockport with a one-on-none breakaway opportunity.
Sophomore Mitchell Herlihey scored the second, and final, goal in the waning seconds of the game on an empty net.
Brockport could not find a consistent rhythm on offense all game as it only had 15 total shots on goal. Questions about the Lakers’ defense were answered with a strong performance.
Oswego State returns to the ice next Saturday night on the road against SUNY Cortland. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
