Oswego State women’s head soccer coach Brian McGrane was inducted into the Plattsburgh State Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 16 in recognition of his outstanding playing career as a Cardinal.
“It’s such a humbling honor,” McGrane said. “It is nice to be recognized by the committee of all the former coaches and athletes.”
In all four of his seasons playing at Plattsburgh State (1999-2002), McGrane was named to the All-SUNYAC First Team and NSCAA All-Region First Team. He was also named the tenth All-American in the school’s history during his junior year.
While he recognizes his accomplishments, McGrane was humble in saying that it could not have been possible without some influential figures, who also attended the induction ceremony.
“I’m so proud to have shared it with the teammates and coaches that I’ve had” he said. “They were all there to hear the speech and take it all in. Some of those guys sacrificed quite a bit for my success in terms of defending, or maybe not getting the goal or the assist so that I could.”
McGrane’s modesty goes a long way in showing what kind of a teammate he was, but looking at the numbers McGrane recorded in his time at SUNY Plattsburgh shows what a talented player he was as well.
In his decorated playing career as a midfielder, McGrane netted 27 goals and passed for 22 assists, leading the Cardinals to a 62-19-5 record over his four years there. He also led his team to two SUNYAC titles and two NCAA appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Now continuing his soccer career as the head women’s soccer coach at Oswego State, McGrane touched on the interesting dynamic that coaching for his alma mater’s historic rival presents.
“It’s definitely interesting,” McGrane said. “I think it means something when we go [To Plattsburgh] to play… It’s just such a competitive feeling when we play.”
While he recognizes that there is a rivalry and that Oswego State is his current home, McGrane added that SUNY Plattsburgh will always have a special place with him and his induction into the Hall of Fame makes it that much more special.
“It’s just such an honor to be a part of that history,” McGrane said. “It’s definitely something I will never forget.”
