Lakers advance to conference championship

The Oswego State Lakers defeated the College at Brockport Golder Eagles in an elimination game, 11-4.

The No. 2 Lakers (26-10, 14-4 SUNYAC) combined for 15 hits with two home runs and a double in the game. The No. 3 Golden Eagles (20-17, 10-8 SUNYAC) recorded eight hits with a double on the day.

Robert Donnelly (W, 3-1) pitched 8 2/3 innings and threw 130 pitches, a season high for the freshman. He was able to strikeout three batters and walked six by the end of his outing. Donnelly’s earned run average improves to 1.15 on the season. Tyler Clifford (L, 3-4) started for the Golden Eagles and pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up eight of the 11 runs scored by the Lakers.

Bats were hot for the Lakers, who were able to score nine runs on 13 hits earlier in an earlier win against SUNY Fredonia. Dan Saccocio went 2 for 5 with three RBIs thanks to a double and a home run. Eric Hamilton went 1 for 5 on the day, but his one hit was a home run over the left field fence. John Rauseo went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Wes Randall shined in the game going 4 for 4 with an RBI.

For the Golden Eagles, Anthony Barbetto went 2 for 4 and drew a walk. Shawn Peake drew two walks and went 2 for 2.

The win sets Oswego State up to face No. 1 SUNY Cortland (35-2, 17-1 SUNYAC) in the championship game today at noon. The Red Dragons are ranked No. 1 nationally and earned the top seed in the conference. The winner of the tournament receives an automatic bid in the NCAA regional tournament. If the Lakers want to win the tournament they need to beat the Red Dragons twice. A possible game two would be played at 3:30 p.m. today.
