Game Preview: Oswego Women’s Hockey vs. Cortland

Today at 3 p.m. at the Marano Campus Center Ice Arena, SUNY Oswego Women’s Hockey takes on SUNY Cortland for the 2nd of their final two game series this weekend. Last night, the Lakers dominated the Red Dragons in a 4-0 victory, the Lakers’ second of the season.

The first quarter brought an edgy defensive battle, and the score remained at zero all after twenty minutes. Oswego’s head coach Diane Dillon described the first period as “sloppy” and said that her team looked like they “were skating on mud.”

Then with just less than ten minutes remaining in the 2nd period, the Lakers scored three goals in under four minutes to break away with the score. A fourth goal in the first minute of third period, (fourth in nine minutes) really opened the game up, and the score remained there until the end.

Once again, as they did against New England College, four different players scored four goals. Erika Truschke, Lydia Cosgrove, Brennan Butler, and Rachel Lenard each all scored in Friday’s contest, and all but one were with the help of an assist.

Coach Dillon looks to continue her undefeated streak against Cortland, as she is now 11-0-7 all time against the Red Dragons, outscoring them 43-19.

Now as ECAC West Conference Play has begun for both teams, it’s a time to start off the year strong and get ahead in the standings, and separate themselves when it matters at the end of the year for playoff seeding. Both Oswego and Cortland beat New England College, but lost to Castleton State in non-conference play so far this year.

Cortland plays Oswego, and then travels to Elmira for a weekend series, and then hosts their first home game December 6th, against Utica College.

Oswego plays at Utica College next Saturday at Utica, and then play them home the following Sunday. Then they get SUNY Potsdam at home for November 21st and 22nd, and host Hamilton College that Tuesday, their last home game before winter break.
