University Police will have “Buckle Up” patrols from April 23 to May 6, with special nighttime enforcement, making sure drivers and passengers are wearing their seatbelt, police said in a statement.
“Wearing your seatbelt costs you nothing,” Lt. Kevin Velzy said in a statement. “But not wearing one could cost you everything. So don’t risk it with a ticket or worse, a life. Please remember to buckle up day and night – Click It or Ticket.”
Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death in the nation, police said. Approximately one in five drivers and passengers do not regularly wear seatbelts.
The “Buckle Up, New York Click It or Ticket” enforcement period is a statewide, zero-tolerance enforcement coordinated by the state police and the Governor Traffic Safety Committee to increase safety restraint use in New York state.
